CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
SLIGHT LOSS ON THE YEAR DIRECTORS’ REPORT The annual report of the directors of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society says:— The year’s activities concluded with a loss of £B/0/1. This is considered very satisfactory when it is realised that the sum of £4O/4/5 was expended on the painting of the caretaker's house and the grandstand roof, besides which a further sum of £4/7/6 was expended on sundry repairs and improvements to the track. The assets exceed liabilities by £4820/18/10. Sports. Real misfortune dogged our steps so far as the sports meeting was concerned. A serious outbreak of infantile paralysis made it necessary to delete dancing events from the programme only after a proposal had been defeated that the sports be abandoned for the year. After considerable expense to bring two Australian cyclists to New Zealand to compete at sports meetings throughout the South Island, every meeting at which they had been booked to appear was cancelled owing to the epidemic, on top of which bad we. ther made it necessary to abandon our own fixture. The loss occasioned by this set-back was £B4. 9/6. The Society again conducted a successful art union. As we were in the position of possibly being faced with a big deficit on the year's working, we applied for and were granted an additional permit to run another art union. The total gained from these sources was £lll/4/4 which was the means of helping the Society out of a serious situation. Revenue received from renting the grounds also helped considerably. Members’ subscriptions amount to £45 as against £5l last year, and considering that no sports were held this must be considered satisfactory. General. At the latter part of the year the Society suffered a severe loss in the departure for Australia or our late president, Mr A. M. Kilgour. Mr Kilgour had worked hard in the interests of the Society and his strenuous efforts had resulted in a much improved financial position. The best wishes of the directors are extended to Mr Kilgour on his promotion. We have to record with sincere regret the passing of two former directors in Messrs I. J. Bradley and J. A. Munro. Both had proved In no uncertain manner their w’ork on the directorate, and our deepest sympathy te extended to th? relatives. Mrs J. A. Munro and family have kindly offered the Society, in memory of the late Mr J. A. Munro, a challenge shield for competition in pipe music. This action is greatly appreciated. The following directors retire this year and are eligible for re-election: Messrs N. Burns, J. A. Davey, H. Fraser, G. A. Fraser. J. Hole, T. Jacobs, J. O’Leary, R. Oliphant, M. H. Richards, F. Triggs.
