PLEASANT POINT

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the District High School Committee was presided over by Mr Christie. Present: Mrs Taylor, Mrs Cartwright and Messrs W. Crawford, R. More, R. Esler, W. Halkett and the headmaster (Mr J. C. Gibb). Correspondence was read and dealt with from the Education Board in regard to additional accommodation for coal, fuel and bicycles. It was agreed to accept the Board's offer of material for a shelter, and to point out that part of the coalshed was being used as a toolshed. Attention was drawn to the statement made at a meeting of the Levels County Council that the Committee had applied for a grant towards Coronation expenses. The secretary was instructed to write stating that if the report was correct the request for a donation did not come from the Committee.

The headmaster reported as follows: For the period ending May 10 the attendance has been satisfactory. Miss Davies, M.Sc., is at present relieving in the secdonary department, pending the appointment of a permanent teacher. Miss Oed has completed hey period of relieving duty and Miss Greenall will commence in her stead on the re-opening of the school. The Board's inspector paid a visit to the school on May 4, and expressed satisfaction with the general work. The senior inspector stressed the need for the oiling of all floors to combat the dust nuisance. One basketball court has been laid out, and the football ground shifted to economise as far as possible the space for general games. To prevent balls from the basketball court going out on the road some protection is necessary. Attention is required to the evening up o." the football area in one corner. Holly plants have been planted to form a hedge at the back of the asphalt court.

It was decided to oil two floors, and if a success the rest of the school to be done when funds permit. In the meantime it was decided that the caretaker be asked to sprinkle all floors with water and disinfectant before sweeping. A donation of a bag of manure from Mr More was accepted with thanks. Mr More was appointed visitor for the month. DANCE AT TOTARA VALLEY An enterprising committee has been working assiduously preparing for the ball to be held in {dr J. Chapman’s granary on Friday evening. The proceeds will be devoted to the candidature of Miss Chapman (Croquet Queen). RECORD CLOVER CROP What probably constitutes a record for a clover crop this season was threshed on the farm of Mr S. D. Baxter, Kerrytown, recently. From seven acres Mr Baxter obtained 20 bags. It is generally conceded that one bag an acre is a fairly good crop. MINIATURE RIFLES The Pleasant Point Miniature Rifle Club fired its third official shoot on Monday night. C. Thoreau won the Wilson gold bullet with 79 off the rifle in the first round. The trophy and Bowman button were won by J. Stevenson with scores of 77, 79, 79.
