TEMUKA

UNUSUALLY GOOD SALES CORONATION STAMPS Extraordinarily good sales of Coronation stamps are being made at the Temuka Post Office. Enquiries made at the office yesterday showed that since the issue of these stamps was begun on May 13, £4O worth has been sold up to yesterday afternoon. The sales on the first day of issue amount ad to £25, the largest single purchaser in Temuka taking £5 worth on that day. Although there is ample evidence of still further popularity of these stamps, the supplies available will, it is anticipated, easily meet the demand for several months. A BUSY YEAR R.S.A.’S ANNUAL REPORT A particularly busy years is outlined in the nineteenth annual report of the Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association, which states that 23 claims for pensions and war veterans’ allowances were handled, 18 of which were successful. Four cases had gone before the appeal board and three of them had been successful. Continuing, the report states that the membership increased from 186 to 197 and the Association was thirtyseventh on the Dominion membership ladder in a total of 86 associations. The response to the Poppy appeal had been most gratifying, the amount raised being £6B/8/-, an increase of £7/15/6, and the Association’s thanks were due to those who supported the appeal and the many willing lady sellers and members who assisted. The re-union had been held in July and the children’s party at Christmas. During the operation of the wood-cutting scheme in the winter 700 cords of wood had been cut and more than £4OO had been paid out in wages. On May 12 members took part in the Coronation celebrations and the Association wished to extend congratulations to a past president, Mr J. King, on the honour accorded him by the awarding of a Coronation medal. In conclusion, regret is expressed at the death of two members, Mesrs T. Harrison and G. Radburnd, and two former members, Messrs James Brown (Milford) and E. O. Shaw (Waimate). Thanks were due to all those who had assisted in the general conduct of the Association's affairs. ApproI 'itely titled "Sworn Enemy,” the picture reveals the amaing daring of a typical gangster leader, lulled into a sense of false security by his own peculiar success. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced the film and made the fortunate choice of Joseph Calleia to play the gangster characterisation. Robert Young has the leading role as a youth whose brother has been killed because he knew too much. Florence Rice, the charming daughter of Grantland Rice, famous sports authority, plays the feminine lead with true feeling and a depth of understanding that establishes her as a real actress. The cast has been particularly well placed. Nat Pendleton, who was the mighty Sandow of “The Great Siegfeld,” appears here as a rising young hero of the prie ring who is the Innocent prey of the gangsters. Young is his manager who has sworn to even the score with the man who killed his brother.
