LARGE PAYMENTS RECEIVED By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. March 18. With the addition of back pay resulting from the new industrial agreement, approximately £20,000 was distributed to watersiders to-day. Nonunionists also received their ordinary pay to-day, but they will not receive their back pay until Monday. This will bring the total pay out this weekend to approximately £25,000. WELLINGTON, March 18. Approximately £28,000 in addition to the ordinary weekly wages amounts went into the pockets of Wellington waterside workers and tramwaymen to-day. This money is due in the case of waterside workers to increases in pay earned retrospective to October 1, 1936, under the agreement made with their employers and in the case of the tramwaymen to bac pay dating to July 1, 1936, for Sunday work. The approximate total payments are.—To -’aterside workeis from the shipping companies £15,000; to waterside workers from the Wellington Harbour Board, £10,000; to Wellington Tramway motormen and conductors £2500, to employees in other tramway departments, £5OO. DUNEDIN, March 18 Although the exact figures are not available, it was stated that the amount distributed in back pay at Dunedin and Port Chalmers amounted to about £5OOO. The current week’s wages brought the amount up to approximately £6OlO. INVERCARGILL, March 18. To-day £5OOO was paid out in wages by the Railways Department and shipping companies to waterside workers at Bluff. The distribution of such a big sum will give a considerable fillip to business at the port. Of the £5OOO approximately £2OOO represented ordinary wages. The balance was retrospective wages from October 1, 1936, in accordance with the recent watersiders’ award. All workers, Including casuals, during the period mentioned participated in the big payment.
