FRENCH DISORDERS
HALF-DAY GENERAL STRIKE IN PARIS United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 18, 10.40 p.m.) PARIS, March 17. While Cabinet discussed the prevention of further disorders, the Union of Syndicates ordered a half-day general strike throughout Paris to-morrow, to protect the accused in the Clichy shootings. The strike will involve 1,000,000 workers but it will not affect electricity, gas or other public services. Workers at the International Exhibition struck, following the riots. Drastic Action Intended As a sequel to the Clichy riots, a meeting of the Cabinet was called. Reports that Cabinet would resign are denied. It is now announced that 140 police were wounded in the riots. The Government intends to take drastic action, and will probably ban all meetings likely to disturb the public peace.
ONE MILLION WORKERS IDLE
RESPONSE TO CALL FOR STRIKE United Press Association— By Electee Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 19, 1.47 a.m. ) PARIS, March 18. One million workers ,it is estimated, have answered the overnight call of the Federation of Trade Unions for a general strike. While it is emphasised that this action is not directed against the Government, there is no doubt that it is meant as a warning to M. Blum not to remain inactive in the face of the provocation of the Fascist organisations. Every precaution has been taken to ensure that the stoppage is not accompanied by disturbances. Transport workers have been ordered to be at their posts at 11 a.m. to enable other workers to return to their jobs immediately after lunch. The original intention to call a strike throughout France was abandoned and th- stoppage confined to Paris.
