COUNTY RATES PROMPT PAYMENT I Ratepayers throughout the Geraldine County have been particularly prompt in the payment of their general rates this year, more than 92 per cent of the total amount levied having been collected, and there remain nine office days when payment may be made before the close of the financial year on March 31. Up till yesterday £11,708 8s 6d had been paid in general rates, of a total levy amounting to £12,685 5s lid, leaving £976 17s 5d outstanding, but, In giving the information to “The Herald" yesterday, the County Clerk (Mr A. A. Readdie) stated that it was probable that a considerable portion of that ameunt would be paid before the end of the financial year. Mr Readdie said that the amount paid so far this year was greater than the total amount—£ll,s93 7s 3d—levied for the financial year 1935-1936, when there had been a rebate of 121 per cent to encourage prompt payment. From June 1. 1936, till yesterday, 1558 drivers’ licenses have been Issued by the Geraldine County Council, compared with 1463 licenses for the year ended on May 31 last year. This shows an increase of 95 motorists, although two months have yet to elapse before the expiry of the registration period. Heavy traffic fees have also shown a considerable Increase. During the registration period ended on May 31, 1936. fees to the value of £476 9s lOd were collected, and from June 1 1936, up till yesterday £591 Is 6d had been collected, an increase of £ll4 Ils Bd. FUNERAL LATE MR WILLIAM KEEN The lengthy cortege which attended the funeral of the late Mr William Keen yesterday bore tribute to the high esteem in which lie was held throughout the district. A pioneer resident of the district, Mr Keen, who was in his seventy-third year, died at his residence, Woodbury Road, on Tuesday. Leaving his late residence, the funeral proceeded to the Pleasant Valley cemetery, via Geraldine. The Rev. Canon J. F. Coursey conducted the service at the Church of St. Ann, Pleasant Valley, and at the graveside. Messrs William, Owen, Sydney and James Keen, four sons of the deceased, were the pall-bearers. CORONATION OPERATIONS Under the auspices of the Geraldine County Council and the Geraldine Borough Council a public meeting to make arrangements for the Coronation celebrations will be held in the Geraldine Town Hall next Monday evening at 8 o’clock. PERSONAL The Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) will leave to-day for Christchurch to attend the M.C.C. v. Otago-Canterbury cricket match. A TRIBUTE BY VISITORS Councillor E. B. D. Logan, chairman of the Works Committee of the Geraldine Borough Council, Informed the “Herald” representative yesterday, that the following note had been left in the Rest Room in Cox Street.—“A

very charming room and town. Thank you. From visitors from the North." The rest room, which was the gift of the late Mrs Margaret Wharton to the Borough of Geraldine, .was opened In 1927.

The Broadway Stage actor, Walter Abel, is responsible for his authentic and vivid recreation in RKO Radio's adaptation of the story. In “The Three Musketeers” the immortal firebrand stands out as a figure of daring, courtesy, reserved tenderness, passionate devotion to a cause, an exponent of physical and mental elan. Paul Lukas, Moroni Olsen and Onslow Stevens portray Athos, Porthos and Aramis, the three heroes. Margot Grahame, Heather Angel, lan Keith. Rosamond Pinchot, John Qualen, Ralph Forbes, and Nigel de Brulier are also in the cast. Good supports will be screened.
