LAWN TENNIS

AUSTRALIA’S DAVIS CUP PROSPECTS By reiegrnnn- hi exAUCKLAND, March 8. Provided Australia can beat America in the Pacific zone contest, the Commonwealth has a very good chance of winning the Davis Cup, is the opinion of Norman Brookes, former Australian and Wimbledon tennis champion, who, with his wife and daughter, were passengers by the Monterey for the Coronation,

“It all depends on the match against the Americans,” said Brookes. “Budge is at the top of his form and we cannot expect to win his singles. Our singles players have yet to be decided. Quist is certain; Crawford is doubtful. McGrath is now the Australian champion, and Bromwich beat Crawford in the championships. Crawford is going back, but there is no reason why he should n°t recover form for a while."

Brookes said that in the European zone, Germany is a most probable finalist. They would be difficult to beat. Henkel was playing very well and had beaten Von Gramm at the South of France tournaments. France was the only other to be considered. Boussus and other young players were showing good form. Brookes very much doubted if England would hold the cup now that it had lost F. J. Perry.
