BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS A meeting of the Tlmaru Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) and Councillors W. G. Tweedy, W. ... Hall, H. J. Mathers, P. B. Foote, A. G. Foster, F. B. Hawkey, M. H Richards A. 8. Kinsman and J. R. Hart. Omn.bu, Committee The Omnibus and Electricity Committee reported as follows: Light, West End Park.—The electrical engineer stated that it would cost a considerable amount to adequately light the Park from Wai-itl Road to Maltby Avenue, and the question as to whether the erection of standards would interfere with the playing ground was discussed —Resolved that a joint report on the matter be made by the electrical engineer and curator. Tenders for Omnibus chassis.—Resolved that consideration of the tenders be postponed until the next meeting, or such earlier date as the engineer may have the requisite information, the engineer to be authorised to visit Wellington and inspect the chassis. The report was adopted. Finance Committee The Finance Committee reported as follows: Advertising Tlmaru.—Z deputation from the Publicity Committee of the Chamber of Commerce waited upon the committee and asked for a grant of £75 towards their publicity campaign. The deputation was informed that there was no power, as yet, to make any such grant except out of unauthorised, but in the meantime they were asked to put their proposals in writing for the consideration of the Council. Sailors’ Rest.—Letter from the secretary of the W.C.T.U., asking for a renewal of the grant for the Sailors' Rest, was referred to the estimates. Street Days.—Application from the Y.W.C.A. for permission to hold a street day in September was considered, and the Town Clerk was instructed to communicate with the various organisations and report further on the matter.

Coronation Celebrations.—Letter from the Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs stating that they hope to make an official announcement in regard to the celebrations at an early date. He states that it is not possible to say any more than that the celebrations will centre on Coronation Day itself and that every care will be taken to co-ordinate both Government and local celebrations. Letter from the N.Z. branch of the Labour Party forwarding the following resolution: —“That on any further occasions of this nature (GovernorGeneral’s visit) that the Labour representative Council be considered as, and is. a representative body of the working classes of this community,” was received. Sound Shell.—Letter from Caroline Bay Association was .onsidered.—Recommended that although the expenditure of £32/19/4 was incurred solely by reason of the erection of the sound shell yet the Council’s claim for refund should be waived, but that the Association’s request for half the percentage rf Lumby's takings amount to £2O (approximately) shoul 1 be agreed to provided that the amount be devoted to a reduction of the item of £32/19/4. The report was adopted. Works Committee The Works Committee reported as follows: Bicycle Stands.—Resolved that the erection of further bicycle stands, which was held over until the latter part of this financial year, should be undertaken immediately after March 31. Assistant Traffic Inspector.—The chair-man reported that he had gone into the matter of the duties, and the question of a motor cycle for the Assistant Traffic Inspector and submitted proposed schedule of duties drawn up by the Traffic Inspector. The proposed schedule of duties is recommended for adoption, and as regards the ’ast paragraph thereof it is recommended that an extra week’s annual leave be granted in lieu of overtime. It is also resolved that a motor cycle be purchased for the Inspector. Airport, acquisition of land.—The chairman reported as to those owners of small strips of land with whom satisfactory arrangements had been made and in regard to those with whom so far no arrangements had been come to. —Resolved that the necessary steps be taken in these cases to acquire the land under the Public Works Act in order that L he work may be proceeded with—negotiations to continue in the meantime. The report was adopted.
