United Rubber Workers of America have served demands upon the Firestone Tire Rubber Company to recognise the union as the sole collective bargaining agency. The company has announced, in view of the uncertainty of the present conditions, that it shut all its plant until, further notice, thus rendering 10,000 idle. Further Demands. The employees of the Westinghouse Electric Company, at Pittsburgh, demanded a 20 per cent, increase in pay, or threatened to strike. Settlements at Woolworths. A Detroit message says: The Woolworth sit down strike has been settled. The strikers obtained a 5 cent hourly wage increase, applicable to forty stores. INDUSTRIALISTS APPEAL TO PRESIDENT CONTINUANCE OF FARM RELIEF URGED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 7, 7.30 pjn.) WASHINGTON, March 6. Following a conference between President Roosevelt and the Governors of the six large industrial States, including New York, Ohio and Illinois, it was announced that the Federal Government would delay the plan radically to reduce the W.P.A. allowance. The Governors had insisted that their States were unable to bear the relief burden without the continuance of Federal aid. The suspensions, planned for June and May will be indefinitely postponed.
