CONDITIONS IN TIMARU The sunshine yesterday was spasmodic, the skj' being overcast for most of the day. Conditions were pleasant, though a cool breeze was blowing off the sea. Records at Timaru Park yesterday were:— Barometer—29.9o. Max. temp.—6l.2 degs. Min. temp, on grass—4s.B. Wind—S.W.l. Rainfall to midnight—.ol ins. Rainfall to date this year—6.7sins. Rainfall to date last year—ll.2sins. Sunshine—s. 6 hours. Sunshine to date this year—4o4.7hrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch—The sky was heavily overcast yesterday morning with a south-westerly breeze blowing. The wind freshened in the afternoon when the sky cleared for brief intervals. The maximum temperature was 58.1 degrees. The barometer rose to 30.10 inches. Ashburton—The weather yesterday was again unsettled. The sky was more for most part overcast, although it cleared occasionally during the morning, and light showers of rain fell. The temperature was cool and a light wind blew from the south-west. The sun shone more frequently in the afternoon. Eight points of rain fell on Wednesday and overnight. Geraldine—Showery in the morning, bright sunshine in early afternoon. Temuka—Yesterday morning was cold, but the afternoon was fairly warm. Rain commenced to fall on Wednesday evening about 10.30, and up till 7 a.m. yesterday five points was recorded. The maximum temperature was 60 degrees and the minimum 46. The glass was rising last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Thermometer: maximum 56.6, minimum 46. bright sunshine six minutes. Wind gauge—miles run in the last 24 hours—Bs. Yesterday, although cold, was for the most part sunny. Dunedin —The weather yesterday was dull and overcast with only occasional glimpses of sunshine. The temperature during the earlier part of the day was warm, but a freshening south-westerly breeze in the afternoon brought a chang* rain commencing to fall after the wind had swung to the south-east. The maximum temperature was 63 degrees. The barometer was steady at 30.05 inches. DOMINION METEOROLOGIST (Forecast at 4 p.m. yesterday) General Situation—A deep depression at present is centred near the Chatham Islands, whils an intense anticyclone covers Eastern Australia and extends across the Tasman Sea. Winds—Moderate to strong southerly, reaching gale force at times in exposed positions, especially on the East Coast and about Cook Strait. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rough north of Farewell Spit and south of East Cape; elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to strong, but decreasing southerly wind; seas moderate to rather rough. Weather—Mainly fair to fine in western districts; elsewhere still changeable with occasional passing showers, especially between Cook Strait and East Cape; temperatures cold with inland frosts in the South Island.
