RUNAWAY COUPLE

REPLY TO THREATS OF IMPRISONMENT United Press Association—By Kieatrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, March 3 Admitting that he received cables stating he was liable to imprisonment if he marries the Hon. Jessica Free-man-Mitford, daughter of Lord Redesdale, Esmond Romllly cabled “The News Chronicle” saying: "Having decided to get married, we shall continue trying to achieve this. Threats of imprisonment make no difference. We both regard marriage mainly as a convenience, and it does not mean the end of the world if we are unable to marry. The other day the British Foreign Office asked the British Consular official at Bilbao and Bordeaux to endeavour to trace the Hon. Jessica Freeman-Mitford, aged nineteen, daughter of Lord Redesdale, and Esmond Romllly, aged eighteen, a nephew of Mr Winston Churchill. The officials were notified that the couple who are now under age, may be contemplating matrimony. Esmond Romilly was recently fighting with the International Column in Madrid. The Hon. Jessica was believed by her parents to be staying at Dieppe, but it has been discovered that she left there and was last heard of from Bayonne. Subsequently they were discovered engaged in the Spanish campaign.
