She is to sail next day for Wellington. The Port Jackson The latest addition to the Port Line, the Port Jackson, which was launched by Swan, Hunter, and Wigham, Richardson, Ltd., last November, is scheduled to leave London to-day for Australia on her maiden voyage. The Port Jackson a motor ship of 10,500 tons gross, has a service speed of 16 knots. Accommodation is provided for 12 passengers in a deckhouse at thj forward end of the boat deck. The cargo space is divided into six holds, five of which, together with their lower and upper ’tween decks, are insulated. Six main hatches are served by 18 electric winches, with derricks of lifting capacity varying from seven to 15 tons fitted at the two masts derrick posts. An important feature of the Port Jackson is that she is designed to the latest practice with a view to the carriage of chilled beef. In speciallyarranged gastight compartments the chilled bee ? is hung from hooks, allowing free circulation of air. There will be space for some hundreds of tons of chilled beef as well as for all other kinds of perishable foodstuffs, such as butter, eggs, fruit, and frozen meat. The engine room will have carbondioxid gas indicators to show whether the amount of gas in a chilled beef chamber remains constant. Port Jackson was the name of the original steamer of the Port Line, and it has long been the wish of the company to call one of its vessels after her. With the removal from the registry of a small trawler bearing this name the Port Line has at last been able to call one of Its vessels Port Jackson. The original Port JacksOn was built in 1883 by Andrew Leslie and Co. on the Tyne. She was an iron steamer with a single screw, of 2644 tons gross. Historic Name Revived A name that has been associated with the New Zealand trade from the earliest days of the direct steamer service from England was revived by the departure of the R.M.S. Arawa from London on January 21. The Shaw, Savill Line have had two previous steamers bearing that name, both of which held pride of place in their day, and the third Arawa will fu 1 ’’ maintain the reputation of her predecessors. The passenger accorn-

modation and public rooms are in accordance with, or even in advance of the latest ideals of tourist class comfort, and the Arawa will undoubtedly become a very popular steamer in the New Zealand service. The Arawa will leave New Zealand on the return voyage on March 27, and amongst the passengers booked are the Parliamentary delegation to the Coronation and the New Zealand cricket team.
