TOUR OF INSPECTION
HON. D. G. SULLIVAN AT WESTPORT By Telegraob -Press Association WESTPORT January 31. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan. Minister of Railways, arrived from Nelson last evening and was met by the Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny) and the county chairman (Mr N. Hawes*. The Minister received numerous deputations, including one asking for an additional ambulance in view of the largely increased number of men on public works and the handling of explosives. The Minister promised to confer with the Minister of Health and let the deputation know his decision. Another deputation complained of the way in which allowances were kept back from them on gold sales day. They were on the bread and water line and the withholding of the payment for a fortnight or three weeks was a hardship. The Minister stated that he would make inquiries. The Hon. P. C. Webb, who introduced the deputations, stated that miners would be required on tunnel work on the Buller Gorge, Parnassus and North Island railway construction, and asked that he be furnished with a list of men available who were prepared to take up permanent work on one or other of the works. One deputation alleged victimisation, which Mr Webb stated that the Government would not stand for and promised an inquiry. Another deputation discussed with the Minister of Local Industries, giving a mass of information concerning cement and other potentialities. To-day the Ministers inspected the Pakihi development plots, also the aerodrome. Mr Sullivan inspected the site of the proposed cement works in the afternoon, and Mr Webb visited Denniston. To-night the Ministers were the guests of the Labour Party at a social function.
