STRONG CRITICISM OF SOUTH CANTERBURY Strong criticism of the actions of the South Canterbury Sub-Centre of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was expressed by the chairman of the centre (Mr E. M. Todd) at a meeting of the executive last week. He declared that the sub-centre was not assisting in the effort that was being made to improve the position of athletics in the province. It would not pay its dues and had been ignoring all requests made by the centre for some months. “They need to be taught a lesson,” declared Mr Todd, “and suspension might not be a bad idea.” On the motion of the chairman it was decided to inform the sub-centre that unless the affiliations of newlyformed clubs in South Canterbury were completed, and arrears of dues owing to the centre were paid, the subcentre’s runners would be debarred from competing at the Canterbury championship meeting. An application by David Campbell Clarke, of Timaru, for reinstatement was referred to the New Zealand Council. A similar application by S. G. F. Robinson, of Timaru, was referred to the council with a favourable recommendation. An application by F. O. Kelberg, of Pleasant Point, was deferred pending receipt of further information.
