BOWLING

TOUR OF QUEENSLAND PLAYERS MATCH IN TIMARU The party of Queensland bowlers, who have been in New Zealand for the past few weeks, and who have played matches in the North Island and in Invercargill and Dunedin, arrived in Timaru on Saturday morning by bus from the south. They were met at the Timaru Park by the president (Mr R. G. Sampson) and members of the South Canterbury Centre, and a number of local bowlers, and were conducted through the begonia house and over the Park, with which they were greatly impressed. The visitors were entertained at morning tea, which was served in the open on the lawns near the band rotunda. The president of the tour is Mr C. Campbell, who is vice-president of the Queensland Bowling Association, and the manager of the team is Mr F. C. Ker. The remaining members of the party are as follows:—Mr and Mrs Kerr, Mr and Mrs H. A. Manahan, Mr and Mrs J. B. Rehder, Mr and Mrs J. T. Ryan, Mr and Mrs P. J. Dallon, Mr H. Siemon, Mr C. F. Siemon, Mr C. Stirling, Mr F. J. Mulholland, Dr. W. W. Nette, Mr H. A. Reed, Mr J. Alison, Mr L. White, Mr H. Crouch, Mr F. C. Cocking, Mr F. Monsour, Dr. J. Robertson, Mr W. Ker, Mr R. S. Siemon. Informal Welcome A welcome on behalf of bowlers in South Canterbury was extended by Mr Sampson, who said that he was delighted to have the privilege of welcoming the visitors, and he trusted that their sojourn in Timaru would be a most pleasant one. Timaru’s slogan was “Sunny Timaru Welcomes You,” and they certainly had sunshine to welcome them that morning. He hoped that when they returned to their respective homes that they would remember Timaru. and would tell their friends what a beautiful place it was and what a pleasant time they had spent there. The visit had been eagerly awaited, and not only the bowlers but the general public would accord them a very warm welcome. Mr Campbell thanked the president for his welcome, and said that he could assure South Canterbury bowlers that the visitors were going to enjoy themselves in Timaru. Before being taken to the Grand Hotel for lunch the visitors were taken for a motor drive round all parts of the town. Match on Timaru Green In the afternoon the visitors played a match against South Canterbury on the Timaru green, the local players being successful by 122 points to 92. In the early part of the afternoon the wind was tricky, and the visitors found some difficulty in getting the feel of the green. An official welcome was extended by the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell). The Mayor, after being introduced by the president of the Centre, expressed his pleasure at being associated with the visit of the Queenslanders. He said that the Timaru people were delighted that the visitors had included the town in their itinerary, and he hoped that they would go away so impressed that next time they came to the Dominion they would want to stay much longer in Timaru. He had often said, and he would repeat, that they could not have too many visits of the kind between representatives of the various British Dominions, because they served to cement the bonds of Empire. The visitors had come to Timaru principally to play bowls, but he was sure that they would form friendships which would last a lifetime. The Mayor mentioned that 60 years ago there was no railway in Timaru, so that the visitors would realise something of the progress that had been made. Timaru was proud of the pioneers who had laid such a sound foundation, and doubtless the visitors were equally proud of their own pioneers. The Mayor again welcomed the visitors, and hoped that they would thoroughly enjoy the match and their visit to Timaru. Replying on behalf of the visitors, Mr Campbell thanked the Mayor for his warm welcome. He said that they had been in the town only three hours, but already they had made many friends. He paid a tribute to the pioneers of South Canterbury, and also of Queensland, and added that they had been much impressed with what they had seen of Timaru, which they regarded as a beautiful town, and they would certainly take away pleasant recollections of their visit. Cheers were given for the visitors, the assemblage singing “For They Are

Jolly Good Fellows.” The visitors responded with cheers for the Timaru bowlers, the Mayor and the ladies. Details of Play Queensland —F. Monsour, H. Siemon, F. Mulholland, L.
