WAIMATE

REV. W. F. NICHOL BOWLERS SAY FAREWELL Rev. W. F. Nichol, who for the last ten and a half years has been Presbyterian minister in Waimate, was tendered a farewell presentation by his fellow bowlers at the Waimate Bowling Club’s green on Saturday. Mr Nichol leaves next week for Temuka where he has accepted a call. Mr J. B. Sinclair, in the absence of the president, Mr C. W. Englefield, expressed the regret of the club at Mr Nichol’s departure. He said that Mr Nichol was one of the best and most

considerate sportsmen in the club, always ready to help new players. He wished Mr and Mrs Nichol and family a happy and pleasant time at Temuka. The Mayor (Mr Geo. Dash) on behalf of the club, presented Mr Nichol with a set of bowls as a token of the appreciation in which he was held by members. Other speakers were Messrs J. H. Mitchell and A. E. Lewis. Mr Nichol suitably replied.

The following rinks will represent the Waimate Ladies’ Bowling Club at the Timaru Women’s Bowling Association tournament on Thursday. Mesdames Richards, Bray, Lewis and Healy (s). Mesdames Winning, Dickson, Turnbull and Travers (s). Mesdames Black, Wilson, Paterson and Reeve (s).

VITAL STATISTICS

The vital statistics for Waimate for January are as follows, the figures for January, 1936, appearing in parentheses: Births 8 (9); marriages 1 (6); deaths 4 (3).

MORTGAGE RELIEF

A total of 264 applications have been received at the Waimate Courthouse under the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act. It is anticipated however, that the actual number of applications to be dealt with by the Mortgage Adjustment Commission will be considerably in excess of this figure.

PERSONAL

Mr T. E. Parry left on Saturday for Wellington where he will join Miss Parry and Mr C. Parry. Mr G. S. Hamilton, manager of the Waimate branch of the Bank of New South Wales, left for Timaru on Saturday where he will relieve the manager (Mr C. C. W. Haselden) for a month. Mr D. M. Stirton, Dunedin, will act as manager at Waimate during Mr Hamilton’s absence.

TENNIS

In the final of the Waihao Tennis Sub-Association’s mixed doubles competition Mrs W. Gorinski and J. Shea beat Miss V. Chute and G. Richmond 9-2.

PLEASANT POINT

TROUT FISHING Fishing below the Opihi Bridge on Saturday evening Mr T. O’Rourke was once again successful in landing an excellent basket of three fish weighing 201 b. The individual weights were 91b, 61b and 41b. The fish, wheih were in particularly good condition, were all secured on the night fly. Fishermen who contend that there are no big fish in the Opihi river would be well advised to give these waters a trial.

BOXING

The keenness with which some exponents of the fistic art are training augurs well for the success of the newly formed Boxing Club. Already some intending members are displaying no mean ability, and it is to be hoped that a repetition of the good form seen will be in evidence when pitted against outside competition.

PERSONAL

Miss Shona Chisholm and Mr Keith Chisholm who have been visiting Christchurch for the wedding of Miss “Bub” Dollimore, have returned home.

THE CROPS

The excellent weather experienced during the last week has allowed farmers to harvest their crops. Cutting and stocking has been the order of the day, and in some instances oats have been threshed. An excellent crop of Gartons on the farm of Mrs H. Wooffindin threshed the fine average of 90 bushels to the acre. The general opinion is that the oat yield is going to be very good everywhere, but in some cases wheat crops have suffered extensively through too much wet weather. The yield per acre is likely to reach a much better average than last season.

WEATHER

Rain fell on 12 days during January, the heaviest fall being on the sth, when 87 points was recorded. The total for the month was 3.30 inches.
