BOXING

LOUIS DEFEATS PASTOR united Press Association—By Electric Telegrapb--Copy right (Received January 31, 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 29. Joe Louis won the decision over Pastor, the verdict of the two judges and the referee being unanimous. Pastor, who was obviously hoping only to stay ten rounds, maintained an almost constant retreat in face of hard hitting and his rival’s advances. Louis tried to make a fight of it but he found his task impossible. Pastor could be credited with the second round only and Louis clearly earned the other nine, but ttie spectators were hoping that Pastor would win by a miracle and “booed” the decision. The crowd numbered more than 19,000 and the receipts were in excess of 100,000 dollars. The Fight Described Most of the first round was spent sparring. Finally Louis drove a right to the head and left to the face and then a right to the head, but Pastor was not hurt. In the second round both were using the left jhb and missing frequently. Pastor rushed in driving both hands repeatedly to the body. He carried Louis against the ropes. Pastor was out jabbing Louis when the round ended. In the third round Pastor began the retreat with the exception of one furious body exchange in which he held his own. Louis missed with several rights due to Pastor’s retreat. Louis landed three rights to the head in the fourth round but they were ineffective as Pastor was going away. It appeared in the fifth round that Louis was getting closer. He hooked several light lefts to the head and then hooked a left sharply to the jaw that made Pastor’s knees knock. One of Pastor’s jabs caused Louis’s nose to bleed. In the sixth round Pastor rushed Louis to the ropes but the Bomber ripped a right uppercut to the face. An exciting mix-up followed in which both swapped body bluws. Pastor was on the ropes and after sparring rushed in twice, absorbing a left to the body and a right uppercut. In the seventh round Pastor went backward faster than Louis could go forward with the result that Louis missed half a dozen rights although landing light left jabs. Pastor clinched several times when Louis overtook him. One minute of the eighth round was wasted before Louis was close enough to attempt a blow. He rammed a right to the chin which drove Pastor solidly to the ropes and forced him to clinch to keep out of range for the hest of the round. In the ninth round Louis ”'ho was desperate, rushed tn continually in attempting to catch his retreating opponent. He missed with a right to the jaw and then clinched. With both hands Louis stabbed several lefts to the face and right to the body. Just as the bell went he landed a savage right to the face, the best blow of the fight. In the tenth round Pastor held his ground long enough to drive a grazing right to the jaw but Louis almost upset him with a left hook to the head and landed both hands to the body. Pastor resumed the retreat but Louis was still pressing at the bell. LOUIS LOSES PRESTIGE SHARP CRITICISM OF CONTESTANTS United Press Assoclatlon—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 1, 1.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 31. Boxing writers sharply criticise the Pastor-Louis performance. One was as disappointing as the other, but Louis was the chief loser of prestige. “The New York Times” says: “The Louis superman myth is definitely blasted. The referee would have been within his rights if he had stopped the bout, declaring ‘no contest.’ If there was an lingering doubt of Louis shortcomings, it was dispelled when he failed to throw caution to the winds and go in and batter down the fleetfooted Pastor.”
