PILOT LAUNCH

NEW ENGINE TO BE PURCHASED DIESEL TYPE FAVOURED The question as to whether the present engine on the Harbour Board launch should be repaired, or a new engine purchased was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board yesterday. The chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick) said that the Standing Committee had discussed the matter, but had decided to leave the matter to the Board. He added that the Harbourmaster was afraid of the present engine. Mr J. Scott: What is wrong with it? The chairman: It has too many ailments. Mr W. H. Orbell said that he had discussed the matter with a person who had had experience of Diesel engines, and his opinion was that this type of engine was the best for the Board's purpose. In reply to a question as to what was wrong with a petrol engine, Mr Orbell said that it was out of date, and there was also the danger of fire. The chairman said that a good many of the fishermen in the port had converted to oil and they had made a big saving. Mr A. R. Guild asked what the value was of expert evidence. The present launch was purchased about 10 years ago and at the time it was stated to be the admiration of the fishermen. At the time the experts regarded the launch as being outstanding, and now it was being condemned. In view of that, he asked what the value of expert evidence was. Discussion ensued in regard to the value of Diesel engines, and Mr W. T. Ritchie said that the thing boiled down to whether they were going to get a new engine or tinker with the old one. To put it baldly, he thought they had been “sold a pup” when they got the present engine, and it was doubtful whether it was new when they got it. In his opinion the Board would be saving money by getting a new engine. For they had service with it, and with the present engine they had none. On the motion of Mr D. C. Kidd, seconded by Mr K. Mackenzie, It was decided to purchase a Diesel engine at a cost of £651, a tender for this sutn having been received.
