SENT TO GAOL
PUNISHMENT FOR OFFENDING MOTORIST. By Telegraph—Press Association NELSON, December 26 In sentencing Leonard William Roden to 14 days’ imprisonment for being intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle, Mr Maunsell, S.M., said there was a heavy holiday traffic on the roads and during the holidays no doubt there would be a crop of serious accidents, probably causing deaths. In this case the man had his wife and children in the vehicle, and if he nad not been intercepted by a police sergeant, he might have caused a tragedy. “There is only one thing for it—that is imprisonment. That is the only course to take to stop it. If people drive cars when intoxicated they must go to gaol.” Senior-Sergeant Petersen said the accused was a relief worker, with four children. Sergeant Simister saw the accused in an intoxicated condition get into the truck and take the wheel with his wife and seven children waiting in the vehicle. The Sergeant then made the arrest in order to prevent him from driving. Accused pleaded guilty.
