NAVY LEAGUE ESSAY COMPETITION

TIMARU SUCCESSES The results of the Navy League and Victoria League essay competitions, open to all Canterbury and Westland Schools, for 1936 are announced as follows: Class A (over 15): Subject, “Japan and its Increasing Power in the Pacific”—First prize (Navy League), Cicely June Higginson, Girls’ High School, Timaru; second prize (Victoria League), N. R. Morgan, St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch. Class B (under 15): Subject, “The Importance of Wireless and Aviation in the Life of To-day”—First prize (Victoria League), Lila Hayes, Girls’ High School, Timaru; second prize (Navy League), Erica Gardiner, Rangiruru School, Christchurch.

Two hundred and forty-six essays were written altogether in secondary schools. The followng schools were represented: Rangi-ruru School, Christchurch, Girls’ High School, Timaru, St. Andrew’s College, Avonside, Girls’ High School, Cathedral Grammar School, and Temuka District High School. The Girls’ High School, Timaru, will hold the J. J. Dougall Challenge Cup until next competition. Approximately 1697 essays were received from primary schools, and 189 certificates have been awarded. The presentation of prizes and certificates will be made by headmasters at the commencement of next term.
