TRANSFER PROPOSED

“NEW ZEALAND” PRESENTATION FUND SUGGESTION FOR NAVAL AUTHORITIES The honorary secretary of the H.M.S. “New Zealand” Presentation Fund (Timaru), has received the following from the secretary of H.M.S. Dunedin (New Zealand station), in reference to the future of the fund:— “I am authorised by the Commodore Commanding to approach you concerning the Timaru H.M.S. “New Zealand” Presentation Fund. The proceeds of this fund are at present restricted to the purchase of prizes for gunnery and rifle shooting, but as these two objects are amply provided for by authorised Admiralty grants, it is not felt that further prizes from the Timaru Fund can be justified. Will you kindly approach the representatives of the donors with a view to a revised allocation? It is not possible to re-allocate the Admiralty grants. “With the Increase in the size of the New Zealand Squadron the need for a Squadron Soprts Fund is now very apparent. Such a fund is usually run in a seagoing command and provides money to buy prizes for sports meetings, marathon races, swimming races, etc., and assists with transport, etc., facilities for squadron teams. When at a place like Bluff, for example, the expense of sending football teams to play at Invercargill are considerable and the cost to the men concerned is more than it should be. It would be very greatly appreciated if the Timaru Fund might be re-allocated to assist in forming this Squadron Sports Fund; a very real benefit would then be gained by the men.

“The Squadron Fund will be available for all New Zealand and Imperial ships of H.M. Navy on the station. I may add that a similar request concerning the Christchurch H.M.S. “New Zealand” Presentation Fund has been acceded to.”

The secretary of the Timaru fund (Mr C. S. Fraser, Selwyn Street, Tlmaru), writes to say he is quite in sympathy with, and approves of the suggestions made, but he would like the support of subscribers to the fund, who are asked to communicate with him.
