STANDARD OF GOLF
AUSTRALIAN LADY PLAYERS
The parting words of the American lady golfer, Miss Helen Hicks, concerning women’s play in Australia have rankled a little in some quarters —unnecessarily, surely, says an Australian golf critic. Miss Hicks, undoubtedly in. a helpful and not carping spirit, said that she considered too much attention was given to theory and not enough vigour was put into the shot.
The criticism seems substantially true, and leading men players have often pointed out that while women’s tees are so far in advance, women will not put full strength into their drives. By retracting the tees the women would be faced with longer carries, and would be forced to play short to avoid bunkers, or go boldly for length. Theory is all to the good, of course, and few can get far without a generous admixture of it.
Miss Hicks did not scoff at theory: she only said, in effect, "Hit the ball with all your might.”
