“JUNK ON ROADS”

MINISTER QUOTES TIMARU AS AN EXAMPLE By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, November 27. In an interview to-day the Minister of Transport (Hon. R. Semple) said 12 new traffic inspectors would be appointed next week under the Main Highways Board. The selections would be made carefully from 1100 applicants. He was satisfied that within 12 months there would be thoroughly efficient control of the Dominion’s motor transport. The committee which had been Inquiring into taxi and motor carrying business was now sitting : n Wellington to prepare its report. He was satisfied that it had done exceptionally good work. The Government would take steps to deal with cutthroat competition and sweating. Referring to the recent meeting of the Safety Council, Mr Semple said the amending legislation might be necessary next session to give effect to some of its recomendations with a view to tightening still further the system of traffic control.

The results of vehicle inspection had proved up to the hilt his statement that “there was a great deal of junk on the roads.” As an example the Minister said Timaru provided remarkable proof of the necessity of a thorough test, and experience was somewhat similar in Wellington.
