LEAD TO WORLD
DOMINION’S LEGISLATION By Telegraph—Hress Association WELLINIGTON, November 26. Keen interest in the intensive period of experimental legislation which followed the election of the Labour Government in New Zealand, is shown by Dr. D. M. Sutherland, former Minister of Defence and Pensions in the Bennett Government in Canada, who is spending six weeks in the Dominion.
"New Zealand is giving a lead to the world,’’ said Dr. Sutherland. Canada had undertaken social reforming, including the establishment of a 44-hour week, bu 1 ; it had been defeated before it could proceed far with its programme. Probably America would soon introduce sweeping legislation along these lines. Canada took a keen interest in Nev; Zealand dairying, for New Zealand was their rival for the English markets in butter and cheese. New Zealand wool, which was favoured by a better climate than in Canada, was preferred there to the local product.
Referring to Alberta and Mr W. Aberhart’s social credit experiment, Dr. Sutherland - thought it would be impossible to carry out the proposals. A big difficulty was the use of scrip money, which was not legal tender outside the province. The present situation was one of vital interest, as any defaults in Alberta would be serious. The western States of Canada were not in a good financial position, and were already receiving substantial backing by the Dominion Government.
