GUILTY OF SLAVERY
CITY MARSHAL CONVICTED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 26, 11.30 p.m.) JONESBORO, November 26. Peacher, the city marshal, who was arrested for a breach of the antislavery laws, was convicted by the jury, which recommended clemency. The judge sentenced the prisoner to two years’ imprisonment, with a fine of 3500 dollars. The judge told the jury that “this was not a lone case in Arkansas, but it occurred frequently and ought to be stopped.” He declared he would suspend sentence and put Peacher on probation if he paid the fine.
The Federal Government showed close interest in the case.
