FAIRLIE DOMAIN WALK COMPLETED A walk around the back of the i Fairlie Domain known as Goodwin ■ Avenue has just been reconditioned and | completed. To finish the line of trees i on either side of the walk the works committee solicits donations of flower- , ing shrubs or money donations to the j extent of 5 - to buy a plant. For the ; pond in the Domain, the committee has j received the offer of two young swans. | It is intended to make the Domain a children’s playground, and to that end special attention has been given I to the repairing of swings and other , facilities. A clear area in the back I is now available for school picnics. The ' motor camping ground is expected to ■ be well patronised over the week-end. I GENERAL Towards the end of this month the judges appointed by the Otago Women’s Gardening Circle to select the best railway station garden in the Otago district, are expected at Fairlie. This year the gardens are in particularly j good order, and two rows of tulips are a feature of a bright display of spring flowers. The gardens creditably reflect the work railway employees have put into them. In 1929 the Fairlie gardens won the cup presented by the Gardening Circle, and in 1935 they were first equal. The Kimbell School is now' open, after being closed for a few days owing to a case of scarlet fever in the district. The Fairlie train will operate on a summer-time schedule from November 9, which is about a month earlier than in previous years. The train will leave Timaru at 4.58 p.m. and connect with the express from the south. LABOUR DAY SPORTS Wood-chopping and sawing events, in which champion axemen from Ashburton, Horarata, Mayfield, Geraldine, Pleasant Point and local competitors will take part, -should be a special attraction at the Labour Day sports on the Fairlie Athletic grounds on Monday. Already 17 entries have been received for the event. Another feature will be the 100, 220 and 440 yard foot races, and a silver cup is to be presented to the competitors gaining most points. Highland dancing, open to pupils in the Mackenzie Country, a programme of children’s races and novelty events, should give the fixture the picnic-day atmosphere the organisers hope to obtain. “FRISCO KID” James Cagney and Margaret Lindsay are the featured players in “Frisco Kid,” which will head the programme at the Fairlie Pictures to-night. The picture is a thrilling story of the colourful but lawless Barbary Coast of old San Francisco, when the underworld ran wide open in defiance of decency and the vigilantes took the law into their own hands. The cast includes Margaret Lindsay, Ricardo Cortez, Lili Damita, Barton Mac Lane, Donald Woods, Robert McWade and Joe Sawyer. Good support will be screened.
