VERDICT OF SUICIDE By Tel , ‘?ra r > > —Press Association BLENHEIM, October 23 A young married woman, separated from her husband, and known as Helene Duane, aged about 24, shot herself with a 22 bore rifle at the farmstead of Mr Lewis Clouston, at Dashwood.

Evidence at the inquest disclosed that deceased, who was employed as a cook, was engaged from a registry office in Wellington, when she gave the name of Helene, but when an examination of her box was made, a document was found which proved to be a separation agreement between Helene Dellabarca and her husband. Franceuco Dellaburca, fisherman, of Wellington, stated in evidence also that a man, an insurance agent, had been in the habit of seeing deceased, and they went out together yesterday morning. Deceased was called to the telephone, and when she came away she remarked: “Billy is going away to the North Island. He is flying over.” She seemed depressed, although ordinarily she was bright and cheerful. A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned.

ORARI MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB’S DANCE The annual ball held by the Orari Miniature Rifle Clubs in the Coronation Hall on Thursday evening proved an outstanding success. The hall was tastefully decorated with streamers, balloons and greenery. Mr A. Earl was M.C. Mr R. Langford’s trophies, Miss Morrow; Mrs Mason’s and Mr W. Quirke’s, Mrs W. Watson; Morrison Bros, and Mr T. Hughes’. Mrs Wright; Mrs H. Pratt’s and Mr Shepherd’s, Mrs L. Henderson; Mr Killoh’s and C.F.C.A’s. trophies, Miss Kathleen Flowers; Mr Norton’s and Mr GCoomb’s, Miss Dorothy Williams; Mr P. Balfour’s and Mrs W. Quirke’s, Miss M. Stevens; Opie Brothers’ and Mr Charter’s, Miss M. Mason; Mrs Rysdale’s trophy for winner of the gold button, Mrs G. A. Henderson; Mr T. D. Burnett’s trophies, Mrs L. Henderson and Mrs W. Watson.

The club’s aggregate cup was presented to Mrs J. A. Henderson, with Mrs L. Henderson as runner-up. Mr W. Quirke’s cup for the best individual lady was presented to Mrs J. A. Henderson and Mr G. C. South’s cup to Mrs W. Watson. Mr G. B. Roberts’s trophy was won by E. Story; Mr T. Hughes’, E. W. Gilder; Morrison Bros.’ trophy, A. Earl; Mr G. R. Leich’s, R. Davies; Shepherd Bros’ trophy, C. Gould; C.F.C.A. trophy, C. Good; Mr T. D. Burnett’s, L. Wood; Mr F. Priddle’s, W. O. Smith; Mr Bowker’s, S. Henderson; Mr T. D. Burnett’s, J. A. Henderson; Mr H. G. Brenton’s, L. Davies; Mr W. Quirke’s (season), R. Smith; Mr W. G. Quirke’s, E. R. O’Neill; Mr F. Martin’s, R. Rodgers; Mr P. Hendry’s, A. England. L. Wood was the winner of the P. G. Balfour aggregate cup. C. Gould was the winner of Mr R. D. Gibbs’s trophy for the runner-up in the aggregate. E. R. O’Neill was the winner of Mr C. Gould’s trophy for gold buttons, and E. Story was the winner of Mr H. Killoh’s trophy for silver buttons. Mr A. Earl was presented with a cup for B grade individual champion in Geraldine County Men’s Rifle Association shoot.

Mr E. W. Gilder was presented with a cup for runner-up of B grade individual championship in the Hayhurst Shield. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY A meeting of the Orari Horticultural Society was held on Tuesday evening, when there were present Mr J. B. Roberts, chairman, Mrs G. Birdling. Miss D. Maxwell, Messrs J. B. Cone, B. Hewson, G. Bray, E. R. O’Neill, E. J. Burke and L. Pierce (hon. secretary). After discussion it was decided to drop the home and garden competition owing to insufficient entries, there being a prospect of only three, and in its place to give sectional prizes. A motion of regret was passed that Mr T. Bates was resigning owing to his leaving the district shortly. The secretary reported that the schedule was now ready to be printed and it was hoped to have them distributed before the end of the month.
