MORE TIME FOR ROWING

TIMARU PRESIDENT’S HOPE CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING A hope that, with the shorter working hours introduced by the new legislature, members would have more leisure to devote to the sport was expressed by Mr G. Wills at the sixty-second annual meeting of the Timaru Rowing Club over which he presided last night. In moving the adoption of the annual report (previously published), Mr Wills said that during the past season the club had not met as many outside clubs as he, personally, woiild have liked, but he hoped that in future crews would be able to go further afield and so add fresh laurels to the club's fame. Reviewing the year’s activities, the chairman said that club races had been conducted most successfully, due largely to efficient handicapping. Entries had been satisfactory and finishes close on most occasions, the events attracting greater public interest than in the past. The club captain, Mr Walter Davies, in seconding the motion, said that members had gone to considerable trouble to keep the plant in repair, but two of the boats were very old and he thought consideration should be given to a scheme by which funds could be raised to replace a boat each year. The report was adopted. Mr W. Ramsay referred to the fact that at the last dance, several of the prize winners failed to attend to receive their trophies, which raised the question of whether or not a dance was the most suitable function at which to present the prizes. He suggested that the committee might consider making the presentations at a smoke concert.

Mr Ramsay’s suggestion was made a recommendation to the committee. Officers Elected The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr D. C. Turnbull; president, Mr G. Wills; vice-presidents, Messrs J. A. Norrie, W. I. Tait, J. Toneycliffe, F. J. Rolleston, D. Menzies and Captain H. C. White; club captain, Mr J. W. Mitchell; vice-captain, Mr W. J. Wood; hon secretary, Mr R. Miller; delegates to Canterbury Amateur Rowing Association, Messrs W. G. A tack and A. A. Perry; trustees, Messrs W. J. Cotterill, J. P. Newman, D. C. Turnbull.
