NEW ZEALANDERS IN ACTION
PREPARING FOR SPRING EVENTS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received September 3, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 3. Some of tlie most prominent spring candidates have entered for the Canterbury Stakes, a six furlongs weight-for-age race and the Canterbury Guineas, a nine furlongs race for three-year-olds to be run on Saturday. Custos led Ilium and Grand Boy over seven furlongs in Imin 35ssec at Randwick this morning, seventy feet out from the rails. This is probably the best effort by Custos since he has been in Australia. Gold Rod, which has no engagement on Saturday, went strongly over seven furlongs, coming home well and taking 391 sec for the last three furlongs. Rob Roy galloped well throughout six furlongs in Imin 21Jsec. Running the best seven furlongs of the morning, Bobby, which has been entered in the Stakes in preference to the Guineas, just led Friar’s Switch, the journey occupying Imin 34Jsec. On Parade went smoothly over three furlongs in 423 sec. Siren covered four furlongs in 52sec. Cerne Abbas and Cyrlllian moved nicely over five furlongs in Imin Bsec. Loud Applause and Egmont covered seven furlongs in Imin 36sec, the former possibly going a little better than Egmont. High Cross went the best four furlongs in 51sec. Silver Ring and Silver Streak galloped at Rosebery, where the flags were 30 feet out on the course proper. Silver Ring completed a good gallop with three furlongs in 38sec. He moved along more freely than at Warwick Farm on Saturday, and seems to have shaken off the reappearance of muscular soreness. Like Silver Ring, Silver Streak carried a light boy. He ran an attractive three furlongs in 37Ssec. His work continues to please track watchers. At Randwick Cuddle ran a very even four fourlongs in 521, revelling tn her work. F. McGrath is not hopeful that Silver Jubilee will keep his spring engagements, owing to striking himself during a gallop. McGrath expects advice from the owner in New Zealand during the week-end ar to whether the gelding will be kept in training. Silver Jubilee is apparently recovering from the trouble which worried the horse’s trainer and ran a useful halfmile in 544 without being bustled. Sretto hit out freely in covering five furlongs in Imin BJsec.
