SUB-ASSOCIATION MEETS Congratulatory reference to the honour done Mr F. E. G. Malcolmson, of Pleasant Point, by his appointment as theoretical examiner for the New Zealand Basketball Referees’ Association was made at the fortnightly meeting of the Temhka Sub-Association’s Management Committee on Wednesday evening. Mr Malcolmson was also elected a South Island vice-president of the Dominion body, and was selected to referee at the recent Dominion tournament. It was agreed to send him a letter of congratulation. Mr J. C. Hayhurstj president of the South Canterbury Association, gave a talk on the recent Dominion tournamejit and organisation without the South Canterbury district. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the Waimate SubAssociation on one of its players, A. Malthus, having been selected for the tour of Australia next year. Arising out of a discussion regarding the tournament, it was agreed to recommend to the New Zealand Association that the best referee at the New Zealand tournament each year be selected by those of the practical examiners present to control the North Island v. South Island match. It was considered that only the best referee should take the game. The present method of securing a referee for the inter-island game is by appointment from the Dominion Executive. A request from the South Canterbury Association for the nomination of one forward, one centre and one defender from the Sub-Association’s second grade sides, to take part in a match against a South Canterbury team chosen from Mackenzie and Otaio, was referred to the local selectors. Miss J. Douglas and Mr F. E. Malcolmson. A game between Pleasant Point, winners of the third grade competition, and Orton, runners-up, was arranged. Game at Clandeboye Superior combination enabled the Clandeboye second grade basketball

team to defeat Kerrytown by a comfor table margin in a friendly game I played at Clandeboye yesterday after- | noon. Mr R. Armstrong was the ' referee. After the match the Kerrytown team were the guests of the home side at afternoon tea. The Temuka Young Women’s first grade team to play Pleasant Point at the Presbyterion court at 3 p.m. tomorrow will be: B. Cook, J. McLeod, M. Ives. K. Dore, P. Palmer, C. Palmer, G. Boyle, I. Ives. J. Douglas. SOCIAL EVENINGS Considerable success attended the dance organised by the St. Peter’s Tennis Club and held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening. A large attendance of dancers was present. During the evening novelty dances were won by Miss H. Cameron and Mr Palmer (Monte Carlo), and Miss D. Keys and Mr R. Boyle (first on floor). The M.C. was Mr S. Erwood and a local orchestra contributed the music. In the interests of the Temuka branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, a euchre party and dance was held in the Druids Hall on Wednesday evening. Card winners were Mesdames W. J. Quested. W. Hobbs and Messrs C. Bell and W. McGillen. For the dance, music, which was supplied by Mr J. Rickus, Mr R. Thomas was M.C. PERSONAL Mr S. Torepe, who has been assistant town clerk of New Brighton for the last seven years, has been appointed clerk to the Ohakune Borough Council, from among 72 applicants. Mr Torepe is a son of Mrs and the late Mr W. Torepe, Arowhenua. Mr J. Bremner returned to Temuka on Wednesday from the jubilee celebrations of the Southbridge (Milton) School, of which he was the oldest expupil present. Mr Bremner went to the school in 1868, after having commenced his education at a Dunedin school. Miss G. Aker, who has been spending a period of sick leave with her parents at Orari, has returned to Kaiapoi. GENERAL NEWS Together with the South Canterbury Maori footban team, when it visits Tuahiwi to-morrow for the Arepa Cup match, will go the members of the Huirapa basketball team, which has accepted an offer of a match against a Tuahiwi side. The offer of the game went to the local runanga which declined it, but the Huirapa Club arranged a game. The teams leave early to-morrow morning. The Temuka junior football team to play W.ashdyke at Washdyke tomorrow will be (bus leaving at 2 p.m.): A. McGregor, M. Quinn. V. Sullivan, W. Horgan, T. Farrell, B. Davis, S. Grant, E. Hutcheson, G. Boyle. “THE BRIDE COMES HOME ” One of the smartest comedy romances of the year will reach the Elite Theatre to-night, with the opening of Paramount’s “The Bride Comes Home,” in which Claudette Colbert and Fred Mac Murray are starred. In a day when it is difficult to get away from the patterned story, this tale of a modern boy and girl who can’t spend five minutes together without fighting, yet who find they can’t stay away from each other, is as refreshing as a spring breeze in the hill country. Miss Colbert is the daughter of a Chicago financier who had gone distressingly broke. Though reared in great luxury, the girl nevertheless has plenty of pluck, and decides to go to work.
