SKI SPORTS
INTERNATIONAL CONTEST By Telegraph—Press Association THE CHATEAU, August 31. The first ski contest between two British Dominions and the first international match ever held in the Southern Hemisphere commenced at Mount Ruapehu to-day, when the men’s slalom between Australia and New Zealand was decided. The race resulted in a victory for Australia, but the New Zealanders made a fine showing. An attempt was made to hold the women's slalom and men’s jump but a bitterly cold wind and driving snow made it impossible. The Australian team comprised G. W. Mitchell and D. Stogdale, and the New Zealand team A. Wigley and B. Murphy. Several other New Zealanders also had a run over the course. When the detailed results had been worked out, it was revealed that Stogdale was second to Mitchell, with Wigley and Murphy very close to him. McMillan, who was not chosen in the slalom team, although he will represent New Zealand in the langlau downhill and Jump actually beat both his team members. Details are as follows: Australia: T. W. Mitchell (Imin 38 l-ssec for two descents), 100 points, and D. Stogdale (2min 16 4-ssec), 71.80 points—l7l.Bo points. New Zealand: A. Wigley (2min 21 4-ssec), 69.26 points, and B. Murphy (2rain 25 2-ssec), 67.56 points—l36.B2 points. B. McMillan’s total time was 2min 17 l-ssec for 71.57 points.
