CONDITIONS IN TIMARU The week-end was mainly clouded and not at all pleasant after rain on Friday night. There was a little sunshine but conditions yesterday were cold with several showers.
Records at the Timaru Park on Saturday were:— Barometer—29.3o. Max. temp.—49. Min. temp, on grass—4o.6. Frost—Nil. Wind—S.E.l. Rainfall—.27in. Sunshine—3.2 hours.
Records yesterday were:— Barometer —29.34. Max. temp.—sl.2. Min. temp, on grass—33. Frost—Nil. Wind—S.S.W.2. Rainfall (at 7 p.m.)—.o6in. Rainfall to date this year—2l.69in. Rainfall to date last year—l3.24in. Sunshine—3.4 hours. Sunshine to date this year—l2ls.lhrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: Light showers fell on Saturday morning and after a fine afternoon rain fell heavily at night. Yesterday was fine but overcast, and there was a cold blustering southwesterly wind. The barometer was steady at 29.6 inches. Geraldine: Saturday, air temperatures, min. 43, max. 49. at 9 a.m. 45. Rainfall at “Waitui” 55 points. Showery in morning, dull and overcast later. Yesterday—Air temperatures, min. 41, max. 51, at 9 a.m. 47. Rainfall 12 points. Dull and overcast, fresh southeasterly wind.
Temuka: Cold weather with intermittent showers of rain aggregating 32 points was experienced in Temuka during the week-end. The maximum temperature was 50 degrees on Saturday and 48 yesterday. The glass last evening was steady.
Dunediu: A light north-east breeze prevailed on Saturday, and fine misty rain fell throughout the day. There was a strong south-west breeze yesterday and heavy rain fell at intervals. Temperatures were low, the maximum being 47deg. The barometer rose during the day.
DOMINION METEOROLOGIST (Forecast at 4 p.m. yesterday)
General situation.—An intense cyclonic depression crossed the Dominion during Saturday night and a slight secondary has been located today west of the Cook Strait area. Pressure is very high over southeastern Australia.
Winds—Westerly at first from Cook Strait northwards, but strong southerlies soon preyialing generally, reaching gale force at many places. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rough to high. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong southerly winds to gale and rough to high seas. Weather —Cold, unsettled and squally with rain in most districts and some further heavy falls in the central areas, and also on the East Coast of the South Island; snow on the higher levels and hail on parts of the coast; improving shortly on the West Coast of the South Island.
