The Berlin correspondent of the “Morning Post” says: “Well informed Government officials explained that the extravagant anti-Russian press campaign was intended to prepare the Germans for an extension of the term of compulsory military service, from one year* to two years, with a simultaneous increase in the size of the fighting force. The Government wishes again to introduce the two-year term, because (1) it was the period before the war, (2) the intricacies of mechanised warfare cannot be taught within a year and (3) military service is employing a large number of young men, for whom there is no other employment. Three thousand Londoners, cheered the first British medical aid unit leaving Victoria Station for the Spanish front. A crowd of 150,000 workers assembled at Lille and aplauded M. Jouhaux, when he declared that the French workers could not remain neutral in the Spanish civil war, adding that the loyalists in Spain were ready to sacrifice their lives to bar the way of arrogant and sanguinary Fascism and prevent the Nazis and Fascists turning Europe into a field of slaughter.
