HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY CUP FOR DAFFODIL SHOW At the annual meeting of the Geraldine Horticultural Society in the St. Mary’s Parish Guildroom on Saturday evening, it was unanimously decided that a silver challenge cup be purchased for annual competition at the Society’s Daffodil Shows. The president (Miss A. M. H. Howell) presided over a good attendance. Before proceeding with the business sympathy was expressed to Mesdames John Brown and W. S. Parr, Messrs P. G. Withers, senr., D. Macdonald, and R. E. Davis in their recent bereavements. Sympathetic reference was also made to Mrs W. P. D. Barker, who was recovering from an illness, and Mr J. Chapman, who had had the misfortune to lose an arm recently. In moving the adoption of the annual report (previously published) and the balance-sheet, which disclosed a credit balance of £l5 19s 6d, Mr G. H. Patrick remarked that the position was most satisfactory. Unfortunately he had been unable to take a very prominent part in the Society’s affairs during the last year, but it was obvious from the position disclosed that someone had worked very hard during the year. The motion was seconded by Mr J. D. V. Ellery. Mr W. T. Turner, who agreed that the finances were satisfactory, asked why there had been a decline in the door receipts. The hon. >secretary (Mr G. W. Coombs) explained that before the show there had been bad weather with a consequent late harvest, and there had also been several other functions on the day of the show. The president: In any case we have managed to keep our finances up. Mr Turner suggested that the Society should endeavour to arrange some special form of entertainment which would attract people to the Show in the evening. Mr Patrick expressed the opinion that the Society had held its own very well; both the Temuka and Timaru Societies had had losses on their shows last year. The president remarked that so long as the finances were satisfactory, and they had a show which was a credit to them, there was no need for the committee to worry. The motion was carried. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted as follows: Patrons, Mrs J. M. H. Tripp and Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.; president, Mrs W. P. D. Barker; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. Sinclair-Thomson, G. A. M. Macdonald, G. Stewart, J. P. Cliff, J. S. Barker, J. R. Orford, P. W. Hislop, Miss A. M. H. Howell, Messrs G. I. Hamilton. T. B. McKinlay, G. Glen, A. G. Brown, W. T. Turner, E. H. Logan, and J. S. Barker; committee, Mesdames F. Kelly, J. P. Cliff, S. Webb, W. H. Mitchelmore, J. Vincent, Misses A. M. H. Howell, L. Hawke, J. Vincent, V. Turner, Messrs Jas. Johnstone, W. T. Turner, G. H. Patrick, A. M. Fyfe, E. B. D. Logan, A. Sutherland,, J. D. V. Ellery, E. R. Guinness, J. McIlroy, and E. Williams; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr G. W. Coombs, hon. auditor, Mr T. H. Bannehr. In appreciation of his services as a past president and member of the committee since its inception of the Society, Mr G. H. Patrick was elected an honorary life member, on the motion of Messrs J. D. V. Ellery and A. Sutherland. Inter-District Competition The secretary intimated that the Timaru Horticultural Society had proposed that an inter-district competition should be held by each society in South Canterbury in rotation. The various societies in the district would each send in an exhibit at Timaru, and the following year the exhibits would compete at another society’s* show. The idea would certainly prgmote interest in horticulture, and would not be very expensive to arrange. The president remarked that if six or eight societies were to send exhibits to Geraldine there would be no room for the local competitors. Providing the necessary space would be the big problem. After some discussion the secretary was instructed to obtain further information as to the amount of space each Society’s exhibit would require. Daffodil Show Cup On the motion of the president it was decided that a sterling silver challenge cup be secured for annual competition at the Daffodil Shows, and, at a subseqquent meeting of the committee, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr G. W. Coombs an.d Miss L. Hawke, that a cup valued at £6 be purchased, and that it be known as the “Archdeacon Purchas Daffodil Cup,” as a compliment to the Ven. Archdeacon H. Purchas, who had been an enthusiastic president and exhibitor during the years he had been vicar of the Geraldine Parish. It was decided that at this year’s Daffodil Show the cup should be awarded to the class for twelve varieties of daffodil, three stems of each. The matter of securing tables for the decorative classes was left to the chairman of committee and the secretary. A donation of 5/- by Mr T. M. Lucy (Temuka) to be awarded as a special prize for the best rose exhibited by a novice competitor at the Summer j Show was accepted with thanks. I Mr J. D. V. Ellery was elected chair- ' man of committee for the ensuing 1 year. The date of the Daffodil Show was 1 fixed for September 30, and it was de-

cided to invite Mr G. E. Knowles (Timaru), to act as judge of the daffodil classes, and Mrs Knowles as judge of the decorative classes. The schedule for the show was approved. The date of the Summer Show was fixed for February 10, 1937. Cordial tributes were made to the services of the secretary, Mr G. W. Coombs, who was voted an honorarium of £3 3s in .appreciation of his services during the past year. A sum of £1 Is was voted to the Geraldine District Band in appreciation of their services at the Summer Show. A vote of thanks was accorded to the newspapers.
