The Queen Mary reached Ambrose Lightship at 12.15 on Monday, breaking the Normandie's record by an unofficial calculation of more than two hours. Shorter Route The route followed by the Queen Mary, however, was somewhat shorter than the Normandie’s, and the average speed below the French liner’s. The British ship covered 3096 miles, from Cherbourg breakwater in 4 days 9 hours 55 minutes at an average speed of 29.28 knots an hour, while the Normandie covered 3192 miles in 4 days 11 hours 42 minutes at an average speed of ”1 knots an hour. The Queen Mary will not dock until the morning, and therefore no official claims on the new record have yet been advanced. SEAPLANE FALLS INTO SEA CRASH WHILE CIRCLING QUEEN MARY Called Press Association—By klecine Telegraph —Copyright (Received July 27, 5.5 pm.) NEW YORK, July 26. A large seaplane, flying out to greet the Queen Mary, crashed into the sea five miles off the Nantucket lightship, resulting in the death of one of the occupants. The remaining nine were saved by the steamship Exennont, which sent details of the accident by radio. Several of those saved were seriously injured, according to a message from the Exermont, which also reported that the Queen Mary was rushing medical supplies. It earlier appeared that the Queen Mary might set an Atlantic record by arriving at New York early in the evening. Whether the accident would prevent this was not immediately ascertained. A later message states that the seaplane was circliflg the Queen Mary when it crashed. The Queen Mary radioed to the Exermont, which had just passed, to pick r> the occupants. The Queen Mary proceeded, but the ship’s physicians radioed direction for the care of the wounded. It now appears likely that the Queen Mary will establish a record.
