WAIMATE CLUB GOOD SHOWING LAST SATURDAY The Waimate hockey teams are to be congratulated on their success last Saturday. Both the B team and the women's team gained their first wins, while Waimate A. defeated Totara, its . chief opponent for the Markham Cup. by two goals to nil. Waimate A outplayed their opponents in a fast game. The Waimate defence was very sound, Hearne in particular playing well. Batchelor played a fine game in goal, while in the forward line L. Ball, who netted both goals, was prominent. Taylor and Samways were not on the top of their form, but play- . ed good hockey. The result of this game gives Waimate A a lead of two points from Totara in the Markham Cup competition, and if the team can maintain its standard of play in the remaining matches its chances of winwing the cup are very bright. The women's team met weak opposition in Maheno B. but played its best game to date. Many of the players are showing improvement, particularly in passing and positional play. Mrs Purvis and Misses Reeve, Moncrieff and Foley were the most prominent on Saturday. The Rovers v. Waimate B game was an hard tussle in which every player worked hard. Owing to the good defence of both sides there were very few spectacular passing rushes and scoring positions were reached only after determined attacks. The newer players in the Waimate team showed a noticeable improvement and "pulled their weight” instead of leaving the work to the more experienced members. Davies showed the greatest improvement. He took more time over his shots and reduced the number of “speculators” considerably. Tackling is his weak point and he should learn to throw his shoulder into an opponent. Stevens showed a small improvement. Both full-backs protected Ede well, but the goalie defended excellently when called upon. Hewson gave promise of being one of the best of Wzimate’s future players. He was able to keep Churchill, one of the Rovers' best players, in check on several occasions. W. Jack makes tackling his forte and is consequently a strong point in the team’s defence. McLeod made a few good runs down the side line but frequently centred too late to give his inside forwards a chance to goal. Ofter the pass had to be taken In an awkward position, making the defending full-back’s job easy. Harvey’s game both on defence and attack was outstanding. He opened Waimate’s scoring in addition to opening up flay for a number of promising moves. Ford’s chief fault is his lack of determination in tackling; by standing off from his opponent he gives him a chance to clear. Ford should also keep up more with his forwards, since with his slower speed he cannot afford to give them a start. Lundon played a patchy game. At times he played the best hockey of the day but did not give his forwards sufficient support in the circle. This weakness is shared by the majority of the forwards who are inclined to leave the work to the played with the ball. Lundon occasionally crowded his inside forwards by moving too far into ■ the middle of the field. Leonard although at times prominent was not up to his usual standard. As a whole the team played well and gave r better exhibition of team work than formerly. With an improvement in tackling and a better understanding of their fellow members’ play they should stand a ■ good chance in the handicap competition. The position of teams is as follows: Waimate A 12, Totara 10, Oamaru 9, Rovers 4, Municipal 3 Waimate B 3. FIXTURES FOB SATURDAY At a meeting of the management committee of the South Canterbury 1 Hockey Association, it was decided to 2 suggest July 5 as the date for the jf match with North Otago. ■ It was agreed to play a match with j Geraldine, or an A and B represent- : atlve match early on June 23, and an ; A and B representative women’s match J later in the morning.
