BASKETBALL

WAIMATE ASSOCIATION NEW TROPHY PRESENTED An additional trophy will be competed for by teams in the Waimate Basketball Association this season. The Mayor (Mr G. Dash), a patron of the Association, has generously given a cup and it has been decided to allocate this to the team gaining the greatest number of goals during the season. This competition will include both first and second grade teams. To date Walmate’s first grade team is leading ■with 82 goals and St. Patrick’s first grade is secong with a total of 49. However, these two teams have played more matches than a number of others and consequently have established a lead. In most of the teams there is room for improvement in shooting: the majority of the forwards are too quick and do not aim sufficiently. The winner of the Association’s competition will not necessarily win the new trophy, so any team that is losing in the main competition should not give up trying but should endeavour to score as many goals as possible. The Waimate team combine well, especially in the centre. Their shooting is accurate and their defence to date has been outstanding. They will be a difficult team to defeat. St. Patrick’s has shown much improvement since the beginning of the season. Their centres are good but the forwards should practise more. High School A played very well against Waimate last Saturday. In this match play was brilliant at times. The forwards showed good combination and were unlucky in not scoring more. Konini, a new team in the competition, have played well and their win against Hunter came as a surprise. Tlielr one fault is high passing, a weakness which spoils their play. Their shooting could be improved but their play is clean and snappy. They show promise of becoming a sound team and since they have as yet only played two games they still have a chance to win. Hunter are not playing up to standard. Their main fault lies in the forwards; the centres pass to one of the forwards near the goal but instead of the latter again passing she aims a long shot at goal. This has resulted in the loss of many goals and is unfair to the rest of the team who work very hard. The Hunter defence is good and the centres combine well. If the forwards combined to better effect there would be more wins for this team. However, Hunter has occasionally been unlucky in losing matches by a small margin of points. The following is the position of teams:
