NOTES ON THE RACING

Outsider’s Success Popular. For the Spreydon Handicap, King’s Guard 486-409, Resound 263-315, and Flotsam 160-268 had most adherents. King’s Guard broke early, and Kotinga and Amonos quickly followed suit. Lady Sonoma led Germanicus, Header and Resound for the first lap, when Germanicus took charge from Lady Sonoma and Header, with a gap of five lengths to Resound, Kuini and Flotsam. Lady Sonoma tangled on the bend but did not lose much ground. Turning into the back Germanicus had drawn out five lengths from Header, who was piloting a bunch. At the top Germanicus was still four lengths ahead of Lady Sonoma, Resound, Flotsam and Kuini, and though he stopped badly in the last furlong he scraped home by a head from Kuini. Resound was four lengths away, with Flotsam two length further back. Another mistake in the straight probably cost Lady Sonoma a place. A Fast Mile. There were nine starters in the mile saddle, but Sunny Morn 302-419, John Jinks 287-295, and Homeward 174-297 carried nearly all the money. John Jinks, Arachne and Homeward broke at the start, but John Jinks quickly caught his gait and at the end of a furlong had raced to the front from Somerby, Golden Direct and Reporter. Passing the stand the Otaio gelding was three lengths clear of Somerby and Golden Direct, with Reporter next. Reporter broke on the bend, and turning into the back John Jinks had increased his lead. At the half mile Kingcraft moved up fast, till at the far turn John Jinks was only two lengths in advance of Somerby and Kingcraft. Round the top John Jinks was being pressed by Kingcraft, Taxpayer and Sunny Morn. Kingcraft was in front two furlongs from home, but Taxpayer challenged him with a furlong to go and Sunny Morn put in a fast run, and in a close finish Taxpayer won by a neck from Sunny Morn, who beat Taxpayer by a head. John Jinks was a poor fourth.

Llewellyn’s Pride Again. Betting showed marked variation on the Midsummer Handicap, the Vesu-vius-Blue Mountain bracket being 4/1, Llewellyn’s Pride 1/3, Rey Spec 2/2 and the Edwards bracket 3/4. Craganour and Kingcraft broke at the start, and Blue Mountain was a trifle slow to move. Avernus led out from Llewellyn’s Pride, Vesuvius and Gold Tinge, but when the stand was reached Vesuvius was just shading Avernus, with Llewellyn’s Pride, Gold Tinge, Craganour and Worthy light handy. At the mile post Vesuvius, Avernus, Llewellyn’s Pride and Craganour were in front, the mile having taken 2.13 1-5, and with a lap to go Vesuvius, Avernus, Craganour, Llewellyn’s Pride, Wrecker and Gold Tinge were bunched. Rey Spec commenced to move up at the back when he was checked by Wrecker breaking. Vesuvius led Craganour, Llewellyn’s Pride, Worthy Light and Gold Tinge round the top, but he cracked up under pressure when tackled in the straight by Llewellyn’s Pride, who stayed on to win by half a length from Gold Tinge, who put in a fine run along the rails and beat Rey Spec, another late-comer, by a neck. Craganour was three lengths away, with Worthy Light next. Coupled Horses First and Second Recess 554-478, Sylvia Sydney-Grace McElwyn 357-780, and Bingen Palm 198-332 were the popular selections for the Linwood Handicap. John Jinks and Fernbrook Lass failed to go away correctly. Sylvia Sydney, Waress and Grace McElwyn were first to show, and when the stand was reached (with half a mile covered) Sylvia Sydney, Homeward, Grace McElwyn, Waress, Mocast, Colonial Boy and Gunfire were bunched. After turning into the back Queen Author and Recess moved up very fast, and going to the far turn the leaders were Sylvia Sydney, Grace McElwyn, Queen Author and Recess. Queen Author was just heading Sylvia Sydney and Grace McElwyn half way up the straight, with Gunfire putting in a great run on the outside. Grace McElwyn hung on to win by a neck from Sylvia Sydney, who beat Gunfire by a head. Queen Author, Recess and Bingen Palm were in line about a length away. John Jinks fell about half a mile from home, but was a long way back at the time. The first and second horses were coupled. Easiest Win of Day. Isabel Derby 741-592 and De Soto 517-471 were the prime fancies for the Liverpool Handicap, though All Sunshine and Grand Mogul each topped the 400 mark on the place machine. Grand Mogul and Aristotle went off at a gallop, and Isabel Derby after beginning well broke and was pulled up at the end of half a mile. All Sunshine, the only horse on the limit, went away followed by Golden Cross and Gunmetal, and racing past the stand All Sunshine, De Soto, Golden Cross, Real Burton, Gunmetal and Editor were in fairly close order, with a long break on the others. The order was unchanged at the mile station (2.14 4-5), and entering the final round All Sunshine, De Soto, Golden Cross, Real Burton, Gunmetal and Editor were still bunched, several lengths in advance of Grand Mogul. All Sunshine led round the top from De Soto, Gunmetal and Real Burton, and the quartette had the finish to themselves. De Soto ran' All Sunshine down with a furlong to go and won by two lengths from the Southland mare. Real Burton was two lengths further back, beating Gunmetal on the post.

Small Field of Trotters. The six starters in the Cashmere Handicap included a bracket in Bessie Parrish and Raima. First Wrack 598399, Bessie Parrish-Raima 367-302, and Teviot Downs 298-288 were entrusted with the bulk of the investments. All went off correctly with New Metford and Teviot Downs in the lead. Passing the stand the reading was New Metford, Teviot Downs, Bessie Parrish, Great Way, with the two backmarkers not far away. There was no change as they trotted past the mile disc, but a litle further on Great Way left his feet and dropped back. New Metford and Teviot Downs commenced the final lap just clear of First Wrack and Bessie Parrish, and these positions were maintained along the back. First Wrack lost her position at the top, and New Metford and Teviot Downs turned for home with a slight advantage from Bessie Parrish. New Metford was first to weaken, and Bessie Parrish secured the verdict by a neck after a stiff contest with Teviot Downs. New Metford was about five lengths away, with First Wrack a moderate fourth. Another to Berry Stable. Grace McElwyn was the only withdrawal from the Papanui Handicap, in which Guy Junior 833-691 was a long way better backed than Peter Locanda 394-470 and Willow Wave 392584. Guy Junior went away galloping, and Great Author compounded early in the race. Sylvia Sydney, Prairie King and Lilian Bond made the early running, and passing the stand the first time the leaders were Sylvia Sydney, Prairie King, Lilian Bond, Waress, Queen Author and Peter Locanda. Agile sprinted along the back and at the mile (2.12 1-5) the call was Sylvia Sydney, Prairie King, Agile, with Guy Junior, Lilian Bond and Queen Author next. Racing down the back the last time Sylvia Sydney was out clear of Agile and Prairie King, who were just ahead of Lilian Bond and Guy Junior. Sylvia Sydney led Agile and Queen Author to the straight, with Willow Wave running round the field. A great finish ended in Sylvia Sydney holding off Queen Author and beating her by a neck, with Peter Locanda, who came on again after losing his place, a length away. Willow Wave was a neck further back. Good Start in New Colours. The four-year-old star Graham Direct 743-555 was always favourite for the Craven Handicap, from Cloudy Range-Indianapolis 253-400 and Rey Spec 250-360. George Rey and Rey Spec failed to strike a gait, and there was further disaster for backers when Graham Direct broke before he had traversed two furlongs. Avernus began smartly, and at the mile post was leading from Worthy Light, Reporter and Sure. Avernus and Worthy Light raced past the stand just clear of Cloudy Range, who was closely attended by Reporter and Sure. Rey Spec had put in a brilliant run to reach the tail of the bunch. Worthy Light, Avernus, Cloudy Range, Sure was the order at the far turn, with Sunny Morn threatening danger. Round the home turn Worthy Light was being •hard driven to hold off Cloudy Range, Avernus and Sure, and a bit further on the Aucklander weakened, leaving Cloudy Range to score by a neck from Sure, who finished fast and beat Avernus by a length and a half, with Sunny Morn a neck further back.
