STAR v. TEMUKA

The game at the Temuka Domain started 20 minutes late. Button and Shillito, the opening pair, had scored 14 at stumps ,on the first day and the former opened from the south end to Tully. Johnson went on at the south end and off his third ball Shillito was caught by Reynolds. The batsmen played quietly adding only two runs before Welsford was caught out by Stewart off the third ball of Johnson’s third over, two wickets being down for 18 runs. After 40 minutes’ play, Stewart replaced Tully, 32 runs being on the board. In Stewart's fourth over he got Cague leg before wicket, the score then standing at 41. Roddick joined Button and the latter, in Reynold’s first over was also dismissed leg before. In his second over Reynolds bowled Roddick and Hahn played on to Johnson. Dobier and Auld were batting at the afternoon tea interval and the score was 78. Johnson opened the bowling at the south end and Temuka’s score was equalled with a bye off him, six wickets being down. Reynolds tried bowling slows and Dobier hit three boundaries off him in one over. Dobier was not at home to Tully's slows. He survived several appeals and was then clean bowled by Stewart. S. Taylor was bowled without any addition being made to the score. R. Taylor was dismissed by a good catch by Johnson off Stewart and Mulvey was bowled first ball, the innings closing for 99 at 4.25 p.m. Tully and Salmon opened Temuka’s second innings. R. Taylor and Cague were the bowlers. The batsmen played the bowling confidently and 23 was on the board before Tully was caught by Auld off Button in attempting a big hit. From then on Star gave the home team a practice “knock,” nine of the side, including several who never bowl in matches, having turns with the ball. Temuka played out time and Star therefore won on the first innings by 17 runs. Scores:— STAR. First Innings.
