COMPETITION GAMES RESUMED

FURTHER SERIES FINISHED

The series of matches commenced before the holidays was completed on Saturday in ideal weather. Old Boys A secured an innings win over Old Boys B, whose batting was very weak. Timaru gave Celtic a fair score to reach, and they failed on the first innings, while Star also secured a win over Temuka on the first innings. TIMARU v. CELTIC

Timaru defeated Celtic by 63 runs on the first innings. On the opening day of the match, Timaru made 179, and Celtic did not commence their strike owing to rain. On Saturday they were dismissed for 116 runs. In the absence of S. D. Mason, Kane and Purcell opened and they made a fine start, putting on 67 runs before being separated. Both batted very quietly, but very confidently, and appeared set for a big score. Charman eventually got both wickets. Kane made 29, hitting one boundary, while Purcell’s 32 included three boundary shots. Allcott got Lang with the third ball of his fourteenth over. Sullivan opened well, but after making 15 was caught by Somerby off Charman, whose three wickets had been taken at a cost of 21 runs. Hertnon was in an aggressive mood, and scored 34 in a short time, but the remaining batsmen failed. Allcott took four wickets for 34 runs in 21 overs. Five of which were maidens. Timaru batted for a time and then declared, at which stage they had three wickets down for 56 runs. Walsh and Wilson opened, but after making two, Walsh was bowled by Kane. The same bowler got Wilson after he had made 10. Murchison failed to score, but Charman and McLachlan both reached double figures. Lang and Sullivan opened Celtic’s second innings, Sullivan going lbw., to Allcott after making five. Purcell and Lang made a good stand, however, and took the total to 58, when Lang, who had made 41, was bowled by Knowles. Purcell was joined by Hertnon, and they played out time, Purcell carrying his bat for 24. The B's were obliged to follow on, and in their second effort they fared even worse than in the first innings, Wilson, who opened with Turner, went without scoring, and McDonald also failed to score, two wickets being down for two runs. Marshall joined Turner, and when the total had reached 13, Marshall was bowled by G. Davies who at this stage had taken three wickets for 8 runs. Again A. Lawson saved the side from a very small score, and he attacked the bowling with vigour. He lifted Heasley for a nice six, and also notched four other boundaries. He was twice dropped off G.
