“WAY TO PEACE”

CHURCH LEADERS ISSUE APPEAL

MENACE OF NATIONAL MATERIALISM

United Press Assoclatlon—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 5, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 3. The Archbishop of Canterbury (the Rev. Dr. Cosmo Lang) and the Archbishop of York (the Rev. Dr. William Temple), issuing an appeal entitled "The Way to Peace,” announce that the leaders of Christian communities throughout Europe have agreed immediately to send out an appeal to their own peoples, in the interests of peace, to their Christian conscience and loyalty. The Archbishops emphasise that they are thus participating in an international endeavour to build up world peace on a true and lasting foundation, because it is plain that international covenants, and even the awful lesson from the horror and foolishness of the Great War, were insufficient to ensure peace. Moreover, men’s natural instincts still cling to old deep-rooted suspicions and jealousies. It is also plain that civilisation is as insufficient as science whereon it relies on the forging of weapons which may accomplish its own destruction. Accordingly it must be equally plain that only the incoming of God’s rule of righteousness, truth, honour, justice and brotherhood among men, can ensure peace. Christians everywhere doubtless unconsciously put their natural patriotic instincts, prejudices and emotions first, regarding the Kingdom of God as a true ideal, but remote from actual affairs. But any real loyalty to the Kingdom of God demands that the process should be reversed.
