WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
ARUNDEL At the December meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute, the president, Mrs Charles presided over a good attendance of members. Letters were received from Mrs Hislop and Mrs Paterson thanking the Institute for their messages of sympathy. The Christmas party is to be held on December 16. It was decided to hold either -a picinic or garden party in March instead of the usual picnic on New Year’s day. Correspondence was read regarding the annual meeting of the Federation in Geraldine and it was decided to participate in the display of work. Competitions resulted: Prettiest calendar: Miss H. Pithie 1, Mrs L. N. Brown 2. Collection small cakes: Miss D. Johnston 1, Mrs L. N. Brown and Mrs R. Johnston equal 2. Premier bloom: Mrs J. Ambler 1. Mrs L. N. Brown and Miss E. Edwards equal 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Pithie and Pratt and Misses H. Pithie and H. Pratt. FAIR VIEW The monthly meeting of the Fairview Women’s Institute took the form of a social gathering at “The Barton,” which had been lent for the occasion by the president, Mrs A. P. Kelland. Owing to the inclemency of the weather it was found necessary to abandon the arrangements for the garden party. Visitors were welcomed. Mrs Beck presented a comprehensive report on the half-yearly Federation meeting which was held at Waimate. The remainder of the afternoon took the form of a social gathering, games and competitions being conducted. Mi&s Doris Butchers gained most points in the competitions. A feature of the afternoon was “A Sixpenny Bring and Buy.” The prize for the parcel of best value was won by Mrs S. Raddon.
