WOMEN’S DIVISION

KAKAHU BRANCH The celebration of the first birthday of the Kakahu Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union, which took the form of a concert and dance in the Hilton Hall proved most successful. The guests were received b-y the vice-presidents, Mesdames F. Chapman and A. Maxwell. The president (Miss N. Maxwell), who cordially welcomed those present, stated that a most successful and happy year had been enjoyed by all. She hoped that every one would enjoy the evening, and so bring the year to a bright conclusion. Apologies were received from Mrs B. E. Evans (Provincial President), Mrs Buchan (president of the Temuka Branch), and Mrs J. O. J. Oliver (honorary secretary of the Temuka Branch). The concert programme opened with a song by Mr A. B. Struthers, “The Hundred Pipers," followed by the encore, “The De’ils Awa.” A play, “The Letter,” by Misses N. Dean and P. Ford, two members of the Kakahu Play Reading Circle was greatly enjoyed. Miss N. Maxwell delighted the audience with the song, “When Song is Sweet.” Mrs W. A. Arnold acted as accompanist. Miss A. Kelman recited “Giving Money to the Government." Mr A. B. Struthers again entertained with a bracket of songs. A one-act play “Fortunes,” by six members of the Play Reading Circle was also much appreciated. The cast was as follows: The fortune teller, Mrs H. Taylor; the pink lady, Miss N. Maxwell; Bill, Miss J. Chapman; the girl, Mrs W. A. Arnold; the inspector, Miss J. Reid; the constable, Miss Edith Ford. A beautifully iced birthday cake was then placed on a table on the stage and Miss N. Maxwell invited Messrs C. Ley (Provincial v,ice-president of the Farmers’ Union), F. Charles (president of the Geraldine Branch), J. Macaulay (president of the Temuka Branch), and A, B. Struthers (Provincial secretary), to speak. They paid a high tribute to the work of the Women’s Division, and congratulated the Kakahu Branch on the successful celebration. Miss N. Maxwell suitably replied. Mrs Col'es, the oldest member of the Kakahu Branch, was invited to cut the birthday cake which she did amidst applause. During the dancing which followed, Mr A. McKenzie and Miss R. Spowart, gave most delightful exhibitions of the foxtrot and maxina, which were much appreciated. Later Mr McGeorge entertained with song and banjo. Novelty dances were won as follow.—Monte Carol, Mr B. Patrick and Mrs H. Taylor; lucky spot, Mr Pratt and Miss A. Brenton; orange dance, Mr F. Heney and Miss N. Dean.
