A LONELY LIFE

LOOKING AFTER ISOLATED COASTAL BEACON LONDON, November 9. Four men recently left civilisation to spend four lonely and hazardous months on an Atlantic rock 28 miles off the coast of Britain. They are the keepers of Dhu Heartach, the most isolated lighthouse in Britain. The island of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland, is the nearest land. Between them and the mainland are miles of ocean almost continually storm-swept. From November until March the lighthouse ship Hesperus, from Oban, watches for an opporunity, between the gales, to land stores. During the winter the lighthouse is often inaccessible for months. “We always keep at least three months’ stores in the lighthouse,” said one of the four keepers to an interviewer. “Three of us are always there at one time, while the fourth is on the Island of Erraid, where we have our homes. “When weather permits one man is relieved every fortnight. Between times we are in touch with our homes On the island by radio telephone, and they are in touch with the mainland by telephone. “One of the si:: rooms in the lighthouse has been converted into a workshop and we do shoemaking and carpentry work. W 8 have also a good library.”
