Dec. 28—Winton T.C. The Dargaville Club will open a meeting at Avondale to-day. Big Author and Admiral Wrack have been withdrawn from the Electric Handicap at New Brighton. S. G. Ware, who arrived in Dunedin on Sunday, intends to return to Victoria next week and will take Worship and Foreign Star with him. Mrs M. Harrall, well known as the owner of Red Shadow and Royal Silk, died in Christchurch on Tuesday night as a result of a motor accident during Carnival Week. Top Rank, who was given some lessons over hurdles last summer, is to be given another trial at the business. His recent form has not been good enough to encourage his owner to keep him at flat racing. The new Minister of Internal Affairs will almost certainly be Mr W. E. Parry or Mr H. T. Armstrong. Mr Parry is one of the party who has shown most real interest in the sport, which will have one friend in the Cabinet in Mr P. C. Webb. Tont le Monde was scratched for the Auckland Cup and the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, and Grey Honour for the Railway at 9 a.m. yesterday. A two-year-old son of Nigger Minstrel and Liason has had the appropriate appellation of Quadroon bestowed upon him. Over ninety two-year-olds survived the second forfeit for the Sapling Stakes, to be run at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting next June. C. S. Donald has ten still engaged, Durbar Lodge five and F. Holmes four. “Semi-classic” is a flattering appellation for the Trentham Stakes, which it is proposed to run at the Wellington summer meeting. Penalties up to 101 b and allowances are to be included in the conditions and as there seems to be a possibility of a range of anything up to 211 b over horses of the same age a limited handicap might just as well have been adopted. Locksley is in work again, and has been nominated for the Westland meeting. Another gelding likely to make a reappearance at Coast fixtures is Starshooter. Gunfire credited D. Taehen with £325 at Forbury, this being the largest amount won by a single owner at the meeting. Dominant, who realised 6750 guineas as a yearling, was recently auctioned for 25 guineas. Andrew Robertson, brother of Lou Robertson, bid up to 5300 guineas for the Melbourne Cup winner Marabou, who was bought by Mr C. B. Kellow for 5500gns. The horse was sold owing to the death of Mr Fell, a part-owner, and no doubt Robertson was acting on behalf of somebody connected with the stable. A. Trilford, who did not apply for a trainer’s license at the beginning of the season owing to ill-health, has decided to make another start, and his application for a ticket has been recommended by the Canterbury District Committee. An apprentice’s license has been recommended for J. M. O’Connor. The stakes for the summer meeting at Riccarton have been raised from £1325 to £1550. The Midsummer Handicap and the Craven Plate have been allotted an extra £SO, and £25 has been added to each of the minor handicaps. No r:»:e at the meeting will be worth less than £l5O. The C.J.C. is steadily increasing prize-money with returning prosperity. King Rey was scratched for his Takapuna engagements in order to give him a special preparation for the Auckland Cup. With 8.2 he has not been thrown into the big two-mile race. Not many roan horses are seen on the racecourse, but Laughing Lass (Laughing Prince—Night Out), a winner at Feilding is that shade. Night Out, was by Lord Quex from the Feramorz mare Frosty Mom, the dam also of Staghorn and East Cape, whom Mr Kemball has raced in Victoria. Night Out, who never raced, was acquired by Mr T. Duncan from the Flaxmere Stud when it was dispersed. Legatee, who was taken to Sydney for the spring racing, made his first New Zealand appearance as a three-year-old in the Empire Handicap at Feilding. He was sent out favourite, but could only finish fifth in a field of seven. Silk Sox, whose three wins this season have included the Waverley and Feilding Cups, is by Royal Divorce from Ribbonwork. He has been ridden on each occasion by C. Eastwood, who is now settled in the North Island. Some idea of the herculean task set Jonathan with 9.12 in the Railway Handicap can be gained through Bon Tray. This Tea Tray gelding won the Shorts at Trentham with 7.9, and Jonathan is called on to concede him 311 b. Bon Tray is not thrown in either, as he is allowed only 41b for his defeat by Silver Streak in the Members’ Handicap at Ricarton; a smart three-year-old like Galilee is in at 7.7, and Variant is down to 7.5. After Fast Passage had won the New Zealand Cup with 8.0, and finished second to Silver Scorn in a two-horse race in the Canterbury Cup, she was weighted at 8.11 in the Auckland Cup, within 61b of Concentrate 9.3. Cuddle won the New Zealand Cup with 7.13, and was second in the Metropolitan with 9.4, and has been given 9.0 at Auckland. As Fast Passage won the Auckland Cup, and assuming that Concentrate was a better stayer than Jonathan, this year’s top weight,

Cuddle has not been overburdened, but in recent years the Auckland Cup has proved a hard race for top weights. Apart from Fast Passage, who had 8.11, no winner in the last seven seasons has carried more than 7.11.
