Y.M.C.A.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. was held last evening, Mr W. G. Irwin in the chair. The general secretary reported that the Boys’ Department annual competitions in athletics and tennis had been held during the month, and the swimming competitions would be concluded this week. The Y.M.C.A. Swimming Club had been reorganised and with a membership of 35 would cater particularly for junior and intermediate swimmers. Coaching of non-swimmers had already commenced and life-saving classes would be formed early in the New Year. The Association was indebted to Mr A. G. Tait, Rector of the Boys’ High School, for allowing the Boys’ Department the use of the school baths and rectory grounds for the annual competitions. The Association, in conjunction with the Boys’ Welfare League, had registered 137 boys as unemployed during the year. Physical culture classes and other activities had been organised for the benefit of the boys until work was found for them. In all 415 positions had been found for boys during the year, 99 of which were permanent positions. The financial statement of the working account for nine months showed a sad position of affairs. It was agreed that some special effort must be made to arrange the finance so that the Association work might be allowed to continue at its present state of efficiency. The secretary stated that 1320 circulars had been sent out during the month, giving a brief description of the Association’s work and inviting donations. A number of sympathisers had replied and had been thanked on behalf of the Board for their donations. It was hoped that many others might see fit to contribute to this appeal and so assist the community work of the Association. The general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., Wellington, wrote stating that a party of 25 members of the Wellington Association would be visiting Timaru early in January. It was agreed that the Wellington members be welcomed and accommodated during their visit to Timaru.
