NORTH OTAGO

TOWN AND COUNTRY ITEMS OAMARU, December 4 Adjustment Commission: The Otago Mortgagors’ Adjustment Commission began a sitting in Oamaru yesterday. The commission will be here until about December 17. Official Count: The official count of votes cast in the Oamaru electorate will begin tomorrow morning. The checking of the rolls has been completed. Electric Shock: While working erecting switch gear in the powerhouse this morning, Mr Charles J. E. Beanlands, an electrical fitter, aged about 55 years, and residing in Lea Street, received an electric shock, and as a result suffered a burn on the right forearm and was rendered temporarily unconscious. Everything was “dead” that he was working on, and although the manner in which the accident happened is not known, it would seem that a copper rod, which Mr Beanland held in his hand slipped, or that he slipped and touched a high tension connection some distance away. Medical attention was rendered by Dr. L. Douglas, after which the patient was taken to the Oamaru Public Hospital by the St. John Ambulance. Inquiries there elicited the information that Mr Beanlands was conscious, and was being treated for the burn on his arm. Kicked by Cow: While attending to a sick cow Mr A. Brown, of Kakanui, received a kick in the face, causing a laceration across the left eye extending to the nose. He received medical attention from Dr. R. S. J. Fitzgerald, and was afterwards conveyed to the Oamaru Public Hospital where seven or eight stitches were necessary to close the wound. Magistrate’s Court: At the weekly sitting of the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., a young girl, aged 21 years, publication of whose name was ordered to be suppressed, pleaded guilty to wantonly removing four plants of lilium auratum, valued at about 14/-, from the Oamaru Cemetery.—Mr Bundle said it was a very foolish act, but he would adjourn the charge for 12 months, during which time if the girl’s conduct were not satisfactory she would be brought before the Court and dealt with on this charge. The borough traffic inspector proceeded against Noel Carson for driving a car without registration plates.— The defendant was fined 5/- and costs GO/-). For riding a bicycle without lights, Bertie James Hollow was fined 5/- and costs (10/-). John William Aitcheson (Mr R. D. H. Swindley) pleaded guilty to riding a motor cycle without a license.—He was convicted and discharged. The adjourned case in which Alexander M'Laren was charged with negligently driving a car and not giving way to traffic on the right, was again brought up for hearing.—Sergeant M‘Gregor conducted the police prosecution and Mr C. Zimmerman appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty to the second.—The defendant was convicted and fined 5/and costs (3/-) on the charge of negligent driving, while the second charge was dismissed.
