WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ESK VALLEY The November meeting of the Esk Valley Women’s Institute was held in the schoolroom, Mrs Gray presiding. The roll call, “A Gardening Hint,” brought forth many practical ideas. Songs contributed by Miss C. Whitefield and Miss Marion Mills were much appreciated. The hostesses were Mrs W. Coup and Mrs L. R. Bishop. A humorous play entitled “Mechanical Jane,” was presented, the characters being taken by Mesdames Coup and Bishop and Miss Mary Coup. The audience showed their appreciation by continued outbursts of laughter. Competitions resulted: Nut loaf, Mrs L. R. Bishop 1, Mrs A. Morrison 2, Miss B. Gray 3. Premier bloom, Miss B. Gray 1, Miss C. Whitefield 2, Miss M. Toohey 3. Vase of flowers for effect, Mrs L. R. Bishop 1, Miss G. Gray 2, and Miss E. Gray 3. Christmas novelty, Miss B. Gray 1, Miss E. Gray 2, Miss M. Toohey 3. * A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Bockaert for her demonstration, and for acting as judge. TESCHEMAKERS There was a good attendance at the November meeting of the Teschemaker Women’s Institute. Sympathy with the president, Mrs Gregan, in her illness, was expressed. After the correspondence had been dealt with, a parcel of suede and marquetry articles from the Disabled Soldiers’ Depot, was disposed of. These were moderately priced and readily bought for Christmas presents. Members were urged to make an effort to see the pageant. It will be most spectacular and something to remember always. School children should be given a chance to see history come alive. It was reported that the flag 500 evening held during the month had been a success and was greatly enjoyed by those who braved the elements. The Women’s Institute picnic is to be held on Caroline Bay this year. The date will be decided later. Gifts to the value of not more than 1/- are to be exchanged. Mrs A. Mills, vice-president, iias given a prize for most points in the cookery competition for the January meeting. A demonstration of fruit and vegetable preserving is to be given by Miss K. O’Boyle. A demonstration of tatting will also be given. The competition will be for a laundered supper cloth and the cookery competition will be “A slice of Christmas Cake.” The results of the competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs Horsburgh 1, Mrs Powell 2, Miss McCormick 8. Sponge sandwich, Mrs H. Miles 1, Miss McFarlane 2, Miss O’Boyle 3. Sugar oag article, Mrs A. Mills 1. A child’s reefer jacket (dyed and waterproofed), Mrs Keown 1, Miss Bayliss 2, Miss E. Page 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Henderson and Powell. Impromptu speeches were enjoyed and caused much amusement.
