“FOR THE SAKE OF THE GAME” OBJECT OF NAZI VISIT TO ENGLAND United Press Association—By Electric Telegrapb Copyright LONDON, December 2. A large crowd welcomed the Nazi football team at the Croydon aerodrome. The manager emphasised that the team had come for the sake of the game alone, and would behave as the guests of Britain in every sense of the word. Sir John Simon (Home Secretary), informed a Trade Union Congress deputation that he was taking all necessary police precautions to prevent a demonstration. There would be no organised procession. The football team from Germany, which is to play an England eleven on Wednesday, has been picked from the finest sides in Germany, and an exciting match is expected. In an interview on arrival, the managing secretary of the German Football Association, who accompanied the team, declared that there would be no politics and no demonstration of any sort. Sir John Simon (Home Secretary) received a deputation from the council I of the Trade Union Congress. | Sir Walter Citrine emphasised that It was quite contrary to the council’s dej sire to import any political feeling into sport, but it was the opinion of the council that, In view of the political character of sport in Germany, it was clear that the fixture was being made use of by the German Government for political purposes. The Home Secretary thanked the deputation for putting their point of view so clearly before him. He had never misunderstood the council’s attitude, but he emphasised that the matter had no political significance whatever. Everything was being done by all concerned to ensure that there would be no provocative demonstrations or incidents.
