Ml'S E. F. Hollands is the guest of Mrs H. Thompson, Evans Street. Mr and Mrs O’Brien, Christchurch, are staying at the Grosvenor. Mr and Mrs A. N. Duffy, Christchurch, are. guests at the Grand. Mr and Mrs H Spence, Patearoa, are staying at the Empire. Mrs Hayhurst, Temuka, who has been staying with Mrs J. R. Howland, Marton, has returned south. Miss Wright, Wai-iti Road, will leave to-day on a visit to her sister, Mrs J. C. Templer, Waimate. The marriage will take next week between Miss Dorothy Beddoes Moore and Mr John Macbeth. Mrs Bernard Stowell, Waimate, will arrive to-day to stay with Mrs J. Lithgow, Trafalgar Street, for the KelmanSievwright wedding. Miss Gladys Watson, “Willowbank,” Pleasant Point will leave to-day to join the staff of St. George’s Hospital, Christchurch. Mr and Mrs D. J. Clarke, “Drockill,” Pleasant Point, have left on a campingtour of North Canterbury and Westland. Mrs Alister Mackenzie, “Clayton,” Fail-lie, returned home yesterday after a short visit to Mrs Simon Mackenzie, “Otumarama.” Mrs Edgar Jones and Miss Joyce Jones, “Otiritiri,” who are staying with Mrs F. S. Brittan, Christchurch, will leave to-day to stay with Mrs Griffith Edgar Jones, “Toppesfield,” Waiau. Miss Chrissie Talbot, of Fairlie, is to sing the soprano solos in the Royal Wellington Choral Union’s performance of the “Messiah.” She gained high honours at the Wellington competitions, being awarded second place in the aria contest. Recent guests at Restwyn, Wai-iti Road, included Mrs Perkins, Miss Price, Mrs and Miss Morrow, Mr J. Curnow, Christchurch, Mr and Mrs Rawstron, Dunedin, Miss Walker, Oamaru, Mr Macdonald, Ashburton, and the Rev. Stanley Hinson. The “Evening Star,” Dunedin, announces the engagement of Margaret, daughter of Mr D. Brett Shand, Selwyn Street, and John Frederick, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Saul Solomon. Mrs R. Lyon-Instone, who arrived in Dunedin some three weeks ago, commencing a New Zealand visit of eight weeks to be spent with the various members of her family, arrived on Friday to stay with Mrs H. H, Fisher, “Shenley,” South Canterbury, and will later go north, reaching Auckland on December 23 to spend Christmas with Dr and Mrs Geoff. Fisher in Remuera. She will leave New Zealand by the Niagara on January 10 to return to her home in Queenscliff, Melbourne. Mr and Mrs Mark Williams gave a very enjoyable gift evening at their home in Woolcombe Street in honour of Miss Dorothy Moore whose marriage to their son, Mr John Macbeth, takes place shortly. The evening was spent in games and Mr George Griffiths entertained with some very clever conjuring. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs Macpherson, Mr and Mrs Keene, Mr and Mrs B. Mayer, Mrs Oliver and Mrs V. Williams of Christchurch and Mr and Mrs Strachan, Mesdames D. and F. Williams, T. Heaton, E. Leckie. L. Brown, T. Hayne, K. Garvin, P. Elliot, R. Brown, L. Ayres, G. Strachan, Messrs D. Macbeth, K. McCann, R. Dickson, D. Maclachlan, F. Murphy, and M. Williams. A gift evening in honour of Miss Ruth Sievwright whose marriage to Mr A. J. Kelman will take place tomorrow, was arranged by Misses Musgrove and Shields at the home of Mrs J. Keen, Matilda Street. Some very amusing games and competitions were played, the competitions being won by Misses M. Odell, M. Cooper and Mr Sievwright. Vocal items were given by Misses B. Broadhead and M. Campbell, and a pianoforte duet by Misses Shields and Musgrove. Mr Sievwright performed some very amusing tricks. After supper, the guest of the evening opened the gifts. The guests were Mr and Mrs J. Keen, Mr and Mrs R. Sievwright, Mrs E. Kelman and Miss B. Kelman, Mrs H. Shields, Misses R. Sievwright, E. Wilson, L. O’Brien, P. O’Brien, M. Odell, N. Pearce, M. Campbell, M. Ryan, B. Broadhead, T. Broadhead, M. Cooper, R. Blodorn, G. Woolford, M. McCann, A. Shields and E. Musgrove. Another enjoyable partyin honour of Miss Ruth Sievwright and Mr A. J. Kelman was held at Miss Sievwright’s home, recently. The residents of “The Meadows,” arranged a surprise party, and the evening passed pleasantly with games, competitions and music. The guests of honour received many useful gifts for their future home.
